NZ GST Calculator (15%)

This calculator adds New Zealand Goods and Services Tax at the standard rate of 15% to a price, or finds the GST already contained in a GST-inclusive total. GST has been 15% since 1 October 2010. Enter an amount and choose whether it is exclusive of GST, in which case GST is added, or inclusive, in which case the GST content is extracted. The tool shows the GST amount and both the exclusive and inclusive totals so you can use it for quotes, invoices and budgeting. The 15% rate traces to the Inland Revenue GST pages, checked on the date shown at the foot of the page.

What this tool does

It adds 15% GST to a GST-exclusive price, or extracts the 15% GST already inside a GST-inclusive total, showing the GST amount and both totals.

The formula

Add GST: GST = exclusive x 0.15; inclusive = exclusive x 1.15
Extract GST: exclusive = inclusive / 1.15; GST = inclusive - exclusive

Worked example

A tradie quotes 100 dollars excluding GST:

  1. GST = 100 x 0.15 = 15.00
  2. GST-inclusive price = 100 + 15 = 115.00
  3. Reverse check on a 230 dollar inclusive total: 230 / 1.15 = 200.00 exclusive, so GST = 30.00

Who this is for

Sole traders and businesses preparing quotes and invoices, and anyone checking the GST on a price or receipt.

What this assumes

It assumes the standard 15% rate. It does not handle zero-rated or exempt supplies, which are described in the Inland Revenue charging GST guidance.

GST calculator: frequently asked questions

What is the New Zealand GST rate?

The standard New Zealand GST rate is 15%. It has been 15% since 1 October 2010, when it rose from 12.5%.

How do I add GST to a price?

Multiply the GST-exclusive price by 0.15 to get the GST, then add it. For example, 100 dollars plus GST is 100 plus 15, which is 115 dollars.

How do I find the GST already in a price?

For a GST-inclusive total, divide by 23 and multiply by 3, or divide the total by 1.15 to get the GST-exclusive amount and subtract. The reverse GST calculator does this for you.

Are all goods and services 15%?

Most are. A few supplies are zero-rated or exempt, such as certain exports and financial services. For those, see the Inland Revenue charging GST guidance linked below.

Is the 15% rate official?

Yes. It is published by Inland Revenue on the GST pages, checked live on 20 June 2026.
