Acreage Calculator

The acreage calculator converts rectangular parcel dimensions into acres, square feet, and square meters. Select your input unit (feet, yards, meters, or miles), enter the length and width of the parcel, and the calculator computes the area in all common land area units. This is useful for real estate, agriculture, landscaping, and land-use planning. For irregular parcels, use the Polygon Land Area Calculator with your survey coordinates.

Acreage formula

Area (sq ft) = Length (ft) * Width (ft)
Acres = Area (sq ft) / 43,560
Hectares = Area (sq m) / 10,000

1 acre = 43,560 sq ft = 4,046.8564 sq m = 0.404686 ha. Unit conversions: 1 yard = 3 ft; 1 mile = 5,280 ft; 1 meter = 3.28084 ft.

Common parcel size reference

  • Standard city lot (50 ft x 150 ft): approximately 0.17 acres.
  • Quarter-acre lot (typical suburban): approximately 10,890 sq ft (105 ft x 104 ft).
  • 1 acre: 43,560 sq ft, approximately a 209 ft square.
  • 160 acres: one quarter section in the PLSS (Public Land Survey System).
  • 640 acres: one square mile (one section).

Acreage calculator: frequently asked questions

How many square feet are in an acre?

One acre equals exactly 43,560 square feet. This is the legal definition established under US customary units. An acre is also equal to 4,046.8564 square meters or 0.404686 hectares.

How do I calculate acreage from length and width?

Multiply length by width to get the area in square units, then divide by 43,560 if your measurements are in feet, or by 4,046.86 if in meters. For example, a parcel 660 feet by 330 feet = 217,800 square feet / 43,560 = 5 acres.

What are common acreage reference sizes?

One acre is roughly the size of a football field (about 90% of the playing area). A standard city block is often 2-5 acres. A quarter section (PLSS) is 160 acres. One square mile is 640 acres.

Can this calculator handle non-rectangular parcels?

This calculator handles rectangular parcels. For irregular polygons, use the Polygon Land Area Calculator which applies the Shoelace formula to any set of vertex coordinates.

What is the difference between an acre and a hectare?

An acre is a US customary unit equal to 43,560 square feet or about 4,047 square meters. A hectare is a metric unit equal to 10,000 square meters, or about 2.471 acres. Hectares are used internationally and in scientific contexts.
