Ad Frequency Calculator
Ad frequency measures how often each unique person in your target audience is exposed to your advertisement. It is a critical metric for balancing message reinforcement against ad fatigue. Too few impressions per person and your message may not register. Too many and your audience tunes out or develops negative sentiment. This calculator divides total impressions by unique reach to produce the average frequency, and also calculates the implied reach if you know your impression goal and target frequency.
Ad frequency formula
Frequency = Total Impressions / Unique Reach
To find the impressions required for a target frequency: Impressions = Reach * Target Frequency. To find the reach implied by your impressions and frequency: Reach = Impressions / Frequency.
Frequency guidelines by campaign type
- Brand awareness campaigns: 3 to 7 per person per week is a typical upper bound before diminishing returns.
- Retargeting campaigns: 10 to 20 per person over a 30-day window can be effective for high-intent audiences.
- Product launch campaigns: higher frequency in the first week can accelerate awareness building.
- Monitor click-through rate trend over time. A declining CTR at constant spend often signals ad fatigue.
Ad frequency: frequently asked questions
What is ad frequency?
Ad frequency is the average number of times a unique person sees your advertisement during a campaign. It is calculated by dividing total impressions by unique reach. A frequency of 3.5 means each person in your audience saw the ad 3.5 times on average.
What is the optimal ad frequency?
Optimal frequency depends on the campaign goal and channel. For brand awareness, 3 to 7 impressions per person per week is commonly recommended. Above 10 impressions per week, ad fatigue typically sets in and performance declines. For retargeting, higher frequency can be effective for short periods.
What is ad fatigue?
Ad fatigue occurs when an audience sees the same ad so many times that they begin to ignore it or develop negative associations. Signs include declining click-through rate, rising CPC, and falling conversion rates despite stable spend.
How do I control ad frequency?
Most ad platforms (Meta Ads, Google Display, programmatic DSPs) offer frequency caps that limit how many times a unique user sees your ad per day, week, or campaign. Set a cap based on your target frequency and campaign duration.
How is reach different from impressions?
Reach is the number of unique individuals who saw your ad at least once. Impressions is the total number of times your ad was displayed, including repeat views by the same person. Frequency = Impressions / Reach.
