Asphalt Calculator
An asphalt calculator estimates the tons of hot mix asphalt (HMA) you need for driveways, parking lots, roadways, and patching projects. Asphalt is sold by the ton at asphalt plants and knowing the right quantity prevents under-ordering (which causes costly delays) and over-ordering (which wastes money). The calculation is straightforward: multiply the area by the compacted depth to get cubic volume, then convert to tons using the standard density of 145 pounds per cubic foot. This tool handles the unit conversions for you and adds a user-defined waste factor. Enter your project dimensions and compacted depth to get the tons of asphalt required.
Asphalt quantity formula
Volume (cu ft) = Length x Width x (Depth / 12)
Volume (cu yd) = Volume (cu ft) / 27
Tons = Volume (cu ft) x 145 / 2,000 x (1 + Waste% / 100)
145 lb/cf is the standard density for compacted hot mix asphalt. Results include your selected waste allowance. Always confirm the final quantity with your supplier before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
How many tons of asphalt do I need per square foot?
At a 2-inch compacted depth, you need approximately 0.022 tons per square foot. At 3 inches, about 0.033 tons per square foot. The standard density for hot mix asphalt (HMA) is approximately 145 pounds per cubic foot, or about 1.06 tons per cubic yard at 2 inches thick.
What is the standard driveway asphalt thickness?
Residential driveways typically require 2 to 3 inches of compacted hot mix asphalt over a well-compacted gravel base of 6 to 8 inches. Heavily loaded areas such as commercial parking lots may need 3 to 4 inches of HMA over a thicker base.
What is the density of hot mix asphalt?
The standard density of compacted hot mix asphalt is approximately 145 pounds per cubic foot (lb/cf), or about 2.00 to 2.10 tons per cubic yard. This can vary slightly depending on aggregate gradation, binder content, and compaction level.
How do I convert asphalt from cubic yards to tons?
Multiply cubic yards by approximately 2.025 to get tons. This uses the standard HMA density of 145 lb/cf: 145 x 27 cu ft per cy / 2,000 lb per ton = 1.958 tons/cy, commonly rounded to about 2.0 tons per cubic yard.
Should I add extra asphalt to my order?
Yes. Add 5-10% for waste, spillage, and thickness variation over an uneven base. Ordering slightly extra is much less expensive than requiring a second delivery. Your asphalt plant can adjust the order right up to the time of delivery.
