Baggage Fee Calculator

Airline baggage fees can add up quickly, especially for families or travellers with multiple checked bags on round trips. This calculator estimates your total checked luggage costs based on the number of bags, your airline's fee per bag, the number of passengers, and whether you are flying one-way or return. Fees vary by airline and change frequently; always verify the current fee schedule with your airline before travelling.

Baggage fee calculation formula

Total fees = (Bag 1 fee x Passengers + Bag 2 fee x Passengers [if 2+ bags]) x Segments + Overweight fees x Overweight bags x Segments

Segments = 1 for one-way, 2 for round-trip. A third bag is typically charged at the same rate as the second bag or higher; check your airline's schedule. Overweight fees apply per overweight bag per segment.

  • Fees vary by booking class, loyalty status, and co-branded credit card. Always check the current airline fee schedule directly.

Baggage fee calculator: frequently asked questions

How do airlines charge for checked baggage?

Most US airlines charge a flat fee per checked bag per flight segment. The first checked bag typically costs between $30 and $40 each way on major US carriers, and the second bag costs between $40 and $50 each way. International routes often include at least one free checked bag. Fees vary by airline, fare class, loyalty status, and co-branded credit card benefits.

Does a round trip double the baggage fees?

Yes. Checked baggage fees apply per segment (outbound and return are separate segments). A $35 first-bag fee for a round trip costs $70 total ($35 each way). This calculator applies the fee to both legs for round trips.

Can I avoid checked baggage fees?

Common ways to avoid baggage fees include: holding elite status with the airline, using a co-branded airline credit card that grants free bag allowances, flying on a fare class that includes bags (such as first or business class), or choosing carriers that include bags in the base fare. Some low-cost carriers charge for carry-on bags as well.

What is the typical weight limit for checked bags?

Most major US carriers allow checked bags up to 50 lb (23 kg) in economy class before overweight fees apply. Bags between 51 and 70 lb (23 to 32 kg) typically incur an overweight fee of $100 to $200 per bag. Bags over 70 lb (32 kg) may be refused or subject to higher fees. See our Luggage Weight Fee Calculator for detailed overweight charges.

Are baggage fees different for international flights?

Yes. Many international flights (particularly transatlantic and transpacific routes) include one or two free checked bags in economy class as part of the fare, especially on full-service carriers. However, low-cost international carriers and some budget transatlantic airlines charge for every bag. Always verify the baggage policy for your specific flight and booking class.
