Bandwidth Calculator

Understanding your monthly bandwidth usage helps you choose the right internet plan and avoid unexpected overage charges. This bandwidth calculator estimates total monthly data consumption based on three inputs: the number of users on your network, the average data each user consumes per day (in GB), and the number of active days per month. The result is shown in both GB and TB, along with a recommended internet plan tier based on your total usage. The tool uses the formula: total monthly data = users x daily usage per user x active days. This is a conservative estimate assuming peak usage every active day; typical real-world usage will often be lower.

Typical internet data usage by activity

ActivityData per hourPer day (2 hrs)
Email and web browsing0.05-0.1 GB0.1-0.2 GB
Music streaming (Spotify)0.05-0.15 GB0.1-0.3 GB
Video call (Zoom HD)0.9 GB1.8 GB
SD video streaming0.7 GB1.4 GB
HD video streaming (1080p)3 GB6 GB
4K video streaming15-25 GB30-50 GB
Online gaming0.1-0.3 GB0.2-0.6 GB

Formula

Monthly data (GB) = users x daily usage per user (GB) x active days

Monthly data (TB) = monthly data (GB) / 1,000

Bandwidth: frequently asked questions

How is monthly bandwidth usage calculated?

Monthly bandwidth = users x average daily usage per user x active days per month. For example, 4 users each consuming 3 GB per day for 30 days equals 4 x 3 x 30 = 360 GB per month. This is a theoretical maximum; actual usage depends on activity type, compression, and simultaneous versus sequential use.

What uses the most internet bandwidth at home?

Video streaming is the dominant bandwidth consumer: Netflix 4K streams use approximately 15-25 GB per hour, HD streams use 3-7 GB per hour. Video calls (Zoom, Teams) use 1-2 GB per hour. Online gaming uses 100-300 MB per hour (low, but continuous). Large game downloads and software updates create spikes. Music streaming and web browsing use comparatively very little bandwidth.

What internet plan do I need for my household?

FCC guidelines suggest these minimum speeds for common activities: 1 Mbps for email/browsing, 5 Mbps for HD streaming, 25 Mbps per heavy user. For a family of four doing a mix of streaming, gaming, and video calls simultaneously, 200-500 Mbps is recommended. For remote work with video conferencing, add 25 Mbps per worker. Unlimited data plans are recommended for households using over 500 GB per month.

What is a data cap?

A data cap is a limit on the total amount of data you can use in a billing period before your speed is throttled or you are charged overage fees. Common caps range from 1 TB (1,000 GB) for cable internet to unlimited for most fiber plans. Exceeding a cap may result in throttling to speeds as low as 1-3 Mbps or overage charges of $10-15 per 50 GB.

How does the recommended plan tier work?

This calculator classifies your estimated monthly usage into plan tiers: Basic (under 100 GB/month, suitable for light browsing), Standard (100-500 GB, typical household), High (500 GB to 2 TB, heavy streaming/gaming household), and Unlimited (over 2 TB, power users, home office servers, or large families). These are general categories; actual plan names and caps vary by provider.
