Birth Year Calculator
Finding your birth year from your age, or your current age from your birth year, is a quick calculation that comes up more often than you might expect. Age verification forms, benefit eligibility checks, retirement planning tools, and social history timelines all require converting between age and year of birth. This calculator works in both directions. In Age to Birth Year mode, enter your current age and the calculator returns your approximate birth year along with a milestone table showing the calendar year you will turn 18, 21, 30, 40, 50, 65, 67, 70, and 100. In Birth Year to Age mode, enter the year you were born and the calculator returns your current age plus the same milestone table. Both modes use the current calendar year (2026) as the reference point and display all results as plain integers, since birth years and ages are always whole numbers. Bear in mind that a one-year margin applies whenever only the year is known and not the exact month and day. For a precise calculation including months and days, use the Age Calculator. This tool is useful for genealogy research, retirement milestone planning, Social Security full retirement age lookups, and birthday trivia.

How the birth year calculation works
The calculator uses simple subtraction and addition with the current year as the anchor point. Both formulas assume the birthday may or may not have passed this year, so results carry a possible one-year range.
Birth year (from age) = currentYear - age
Age (from birth year) = currentYear - birthYear
Milestone year (for age M) = birthYear + M
Example: age 30 in 2026
Birth year = 2026 - 30 = 1996
Turns 65 in = 1996 + 65 = 2061
Important: the one-year margin
Because this calculator works with years only, not exact dates, the result is accurate to plus or minus one year. A person who turns 30 in August 2026 was born in 1996. A person who already turned 30 in February 2026 was also born in 1996. But a person who will not turn 30 until December 2026 was born in 1996, while still technically being 29 today. Enter the exact date of birth in the Age Calculator for a precise result.
Birth year calculator: frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my birth year from my age?
Subtract your age from the current year. For example, if you are 30 years old in 2026, your birth year is 2026 minus 30 equals 1996. Note that if your birthday has not yet passed this calendar year, the result may be off by one: you would have been born in 1995 if your 2026 birthday is still upcoming.
How do I calculate my age from my birth year?
Subtract your birth year from the current year. For example, someone born in 1990 is 2026 minus 1990 equals 36 years old. Adjust down by 1 if your birthday falls later in the calendar year than today's date.
What year will I turn 65?
Enter your birth year in the Birth Year to Age mode to see your full milestone year table. For example, someone born in 1970 will turn 65 in 2035 (1970 plus 65).
What year was someone born if they are 40 years old?
In 2026, a person who is 40 years old was most likely born in 1986 (2026 minus 40). If their birthday is later this year and has not yet passed, they may have been born in 1985.
Why might my calculated age be off by one?
Birth year calculators that use only the year (not month and day) can be off by one because they do not know whether your birthday has passed yet in the current calendar year. If your birthday is after today, you are still in the year before your next age milestone. Use the age calculator for a precise year, month, and day breakdown.
