Cabinet Face Frame Calculator
A cabinet face frame is built from vertical stiles and horizontal rails, and getting their lengths right the first time saves wood and time. This calculator takes your frame width and height plus the stile and rail widths you choose, then returns each stile and rail length, the clear opening size for doors or drawers, and handles an optional center stile that splits the frame into two openings. The geometry is exact; member widths are design choices you enter, so the result matches whatever proportions you want.
Face frame formula
Stile length = frame height
Rail length between stiles = frame width - 2 * stile width
Opening height = frame height - 2 * rail width
Opening width = (frame width - (2 + center) * stile width) / (center + 1)
With no center stile the opening width is the frame width minus the two outer stiles. Adding a center stile subtracts its width too and divides the remaining space into two equal openings.
Face frame tips
- Stiles run full height; rails fit between them.
- Wider stiles and rails shrink the door or drawer openings.
- Add overlay to the opening for overlay doors; subtract a reveal for inset.
- Use a center stile to split wide frames into two openings.
- Leave room on stiles for hinges and drawer slide mounting.
Face frames: frequently asked questions
How do I size face frame stiles and rails?
Stiles run the full height of the frame, so each stile length equals the frame height. Rails fit between the stiles, so each rail length equals the frame width minus the two stile widths. With a center stile, the openings split and the rails shorten accordingly.
What is the opening size in a face frame?
The opening height = frame height - top rail width - bottom rail width. The opening width = frame width - left stile - right stile (minus any center stile and its share). Door and drawer sizes are then derived from the opening with the overlay or inset you choose.
What is the difference between overlay and inset doors?
Overlay doors sit on top of the face frame and are larger than the opening by the overlay on each side. Inset doors sit flush inside the opening and are slightly smaller than the opening to leave a reveal. This calculator reports the opening; you then add or subtract for overlay or inset.
How wide should stiles and rails be?
Common face frame member widths are around 1.5 to 2 inches, but it is a design choice balancing strength, hinge mounting room, and looks. Wider members reduce opening size for doors and drawers. Enter your chosen widths; the calculator works out the rest.
Does a center stile change the rail lengths?
Yes. A center stile divides the frame into two openings, so the rails between stiles are shorter and there are effectively two rail segments per row. Set center stiles to 1 to split the frame; the calculator subtracts the center stile width from the combined rail length.
