Cocktail Dilution Calculator

Dilution is as important as the ingredients themselves in cocktail making. Ice melts during shaking or stirring, adding water that mellows the spirit, integrates the ingredients, and lowers the final ABV. Too little dilution leaves a harsh, sharp drink. Too much makes it flat and watery. This calculator estimates the final volume and ABV of a cocktail after shaking or stirring based on the initial spirit volume, ABV, and mixing technique. It uses empirically measured dilution percentages: approximately 20-25% for stirred cocktails and 30-40% for shaken cocktails, following the work of Jeff Morgenthaler and cocktail science research.

Dilution formula

Dilution water (oz) = pre-dilution volume (oz) * dilution rate
Final volume (oz) = pre-dilution volume + dilution water
Final ABV = (pre-dilution volume * pre-ABV) / final volume
Stirred: dilution rate = 0.22, Shaken: 0.35, Built: 0.12

Cocktail dilution tips

  • Stir spirit-forward, clear cocktails (Martini, Manhattan) for about 30-60 seconds over large cubed ice.
  • Shake cocktails with citrus, cream, or egg white for 12-20 seconds - the turbulence helps emulsify these ingredients.
  • Never shake carbonated mixers - shake the spirit/juice/egg white component and add soda after pouring.
  • Dry shake (without ice) egg-white cocktails first to build foam, then wet shake with ice for dilution and temperature.
  • Batch cocktails pre-diluted and refrigerated should not be served over ice, which would over-dilute them.

Cocktail dilution: frequently asked questions

How much does stirring dilute a cocktail?

Stirring a cocktail with ice for 30-60 seconds typically adds about 20-25% dilution by volume (the volume of water absorbed equals 20-25% of the total liquid volume). A 2 oz spirit becomes roughly 2.4-2.5 oz total after stirring.

How much does shaking dilute a cocktail?

Shaking adds more dilution than stirring, typically 30-40% by volume. Shaking also adds tiny air bubbles and creates a slightly different texture. A 2 oz pour of spirit becomes roughly 2.6-2.8 oz total after a vigorous 15-second shake.

What is the final ABV of a stirred Negroni?

A Negroni with 1 oz gin (40% ABV), 1 oz sweet vermouth (18% ABV), and 1 oz Campari (24% ABV) starts at about 27% ABV. After stirring with 20% dilution, the final ABV drops to approximately 22%.

Why does ice temperature affect dilution?

Warmer ice melts faster, adding more water. Very cold ice (-20 F from a freezer) melts more slowly and dilutes less. Commercial ice at 28-30 F is standard. Wetter, older ice can over-dilute cocktails very quickly.

How do bartenders control dilution in batch cocktails?

Batch cocktails are typically pre-diluted by adding 20-30% of the total volume as water before chilling, then served over ice with no further dilution. This is calculated as: batch_water = total_spirit_volume * 0.25.
