Conversion Funnel Calculator

A conversion funnel tracks how many prospects move from each stage to the next. Enter the number of visitors at each of your four funnel stages (for example: website visitors, product page views, add to cart, purchases). The calculator computes the conversion rate at each stage, the overall funnel conversion rate from top to bottom, and total revenue based on your average order value.

Conversion funnel formulas

Stage Conversion Rate (%) = Visitors at Next Stage / Visitors at Current Stage x 100

Overall Funnel Conversion (%) = Final Conversions / Top-of-Funnel Visitors x 100

Total Revenue = Final Conversions x Average Order Value

Revenue per Visitor = Total Revenue / Top-of-Funnel Visitors

Optimizing your conversion funnel

  • Find the stage with the largest absolute drop-off (not just the lowest percentage): that is where fixing the problem will have the biggest impact on final conversions.
  • Model the revenue impact of small improvements: a 1% lift in overall funnel conversion on 10,000 visitors at $95 AOV adds $9,500 revenue per period.
  • Use qualitative research (session recordings, user interviews, surveys) at the drop-off stage to understand why people leave.
  • A/B test one change at a time at the lowest-converting stage to establish causality, not just correlation.
  • Track funnel metrics cohort by cohort (by traffic source, device type, campaign) to find segments with dramatically different conversion rates.

Conversion funnel: frequently asked questions

What is a conversion funnel?

A conversion funnel is the sequence of steps a prospect takes from first awareness of your product to a completed conversion (purchase, sign-up, or other goal). At each stage, some percentage of people drop off, which is why it is shaped like a funnel. Analyzing each stage separately helps identify where the biggest improvement opportunities lie.

What is funnel conversion rate?

Funnel conversion rate is the percentage of people who enter the top of the funnel and complete the final conversion action. Overall funnel conversion rate = conversions / top-of-funnel visitors x 100. Each stage also has its own conversion rate: stage conversion rate = visitors who pass through / visitors who entered the stage x 100.

How do I identify the biggest drop-off stage?

Compare the absolute number of people who drop off at each stage. The stage with the highest absolute drop-off is often the best place to focus optimization effort, even if its percentage conversion rate looks similar to other stages. Multiplying by revenue impact per conversion makes it even clearer where to prioritize.

What is revenue per visitor?

Revenue per visitor = Total revenue / Total visitors at top of funnel. It combines conversion rate and average order value into a single metric that shows how much each visitor to your site is worth on average. Increasing revenue per visitor is the goal of both conversion rate optimization and average order value improvements.

How does improving a mid-funnel stage affect final conversions?

Improvements at any stage compound with improvements at other stages. If you improve stage 2 conversion from 30% to 40%, and stage 3 from 20% to 20%, more people reach stage 3, which means more eventually convert. Use the calculator to model the impact of hypothetical improvements at each stage.
