Days Until Calculator
A countdown is just a date difference where one end is today. This calculator reads today's date from your device, converts it and your target date to day numbers on the Gregorian calendar, and subtracts to show exactly how many days remain. Leap days are included automatically. It also reports the equivalent weeks and hours, so whether you are counting down to a deadline, a holiday, a birthday or a product launch, the number is precise and updates the moment you change the target date.
Days until formula
Days = target date (in days) - today (in days)
Weeks = days / 7
Hours = days * 24
Approx. months = days / 30.4375
Both dates are mapped to serial day numbers on the Gregorian calendar at local midnight, so the difference is exact and includes any leap day in the span. A positive result is in the future; a negative result is in the past.
Countdown context
- The Gregorian calendar is the international civil standard with leap years every 4 years.
- Century years are leap years only if divisible by 400.
- The count uses your device's local date, so results reflect your time zone.
- A negative result shows how many days a date is already in the past.
- Hours equals days times 24, useful for short countdowns.
Days until: frequently asked questions
How does the days until calculator work?
It takes today's date from your device clock, converts both today and your target date to day numbers on the Gregorian calendar, and subtracts. The result is the whole number of days from today to the target. Leap years are handled automatically, so February 29 is counted when it falls in the span.
Does it count today or the target day?
The count is the number of nights between today and the target, so a date one day in the future returns 1. Today returns 0. If you want to include today as a day of the countdown, add one to the result.
What if the date has already passed?
The calculator shows a negative number of days, indicating how many days ago the date was. For example, a date 5 days in the past returns -5. This lets the same tool measure both upcoming and elapsed events.
Why might the count change by one across time zones?
The countdown uses your device's local date. If you and someone in another time zone run it at the same instant, your local calendar dates may differ by a day, so your counts can differ by one. The arithmetic is exact for the local date shown on your device.
Can I use this for a deadline or holiday countdown?
Yes. Set the target date to any deadline, birthday, holiday or launch date and the tool reports the days, weeks and hours remaining. The hours figure is days times 24, useful for short-range countdowns within a week or two.
