Days Until Retirement Calculator

Counting down to retirement makes a distant goal feel concrete. This calculator measures the time between a start date, by default today, and your chosen retirement date, then shows it as total days and as approximate weeks, months, and years so the figure is easy to picture. Pick the retirement date by adding your target age to your birthday: retiring at the Social Security full retirement age of 67 for those born in 1960 or later means your retirement date is your 67th birthday. The day count is exact; the month and year figures use average lengths as a close estimate.

Days until retirement formula

days remaining = (retirement date - start date) in days
weeks remaining = days / 7
months remaining = days / 30.44 (average month)
years remaining = days / 365.25 (average year)

The day count is exact calendar days. Weeks, months, and years use 7, 30.44, and 365.25 days respectively, which are close averages. A negative result means the retirement date has already passed.

Retirement age notes

  • Social Security full retirement age is 67 for those born in 1960 or later.
  • Reduced Social Security benefits can start as early as age 62.
  • Delaying past full retirement age, up to 70, increases the benefit.
  • This tool counts time only; it does not project benefit amounts.
  • Set the start date to a future date to count from a planned milestone.

Days until retirement: frequently asked questions

How is the time until retirement calculated?

The calculator finds the difference between your chosen retirement date and the start date, by default today, then expresses it as total days and converts that into approximate weeks, months, and years for an easy overview.

What is the full retirement age for Social Security?

For people born in 1960 or later, the Social Security full retirement age is 67. For those born between 1943 and 1954 it is 66, rising in two-month steps for birth years 1955 to 1959. You can claim reduced benefits as early as 62 or increased benefits by delaying up to age 70.

How do you work out a retirement date from a target age?

Add your target retirement age in years to your date of birth. For example, retiring at 67 means your retirement date is your 67th birthday. Enter that date as the retirement date here to count down to it from today.

Why convert days into months and years?

A large day count like 4,000 days is hard to picture, so the calculator also shows roughly 11 years or 131 months. These conversions use average lengths, about 30.44 days per month and 365.25 days per year, so they are close estimates rather than exact calendar counts.

Does this calculator estimate my pension or savings?

No. It counts the time remaining until a retirement date you choose. It does not project savings, Social Security benefits, or pension income, which depend on your earnings record and contributions. Use a dedicated retirement savings tool for those figures.
