Deck Cost Calculator

Decking cost is driven by area: both materials and labor scale with the square footage you build. This calculator multiplies your deck's length by its width to get the area, then applies the material price per square foot and labor rate per square foot that you supply from real quotes. It returns the area, material cost, labor cost and total, plus the all-in cost per square foot. Because every rate is your own input, the estimate stays honest and reflects your local prices.

Deck cost formula

Area (sq ft) = length * width
Material cost = area * material price per sq ft
Labor cost = area * labor rate per sq ft
Total cost = material cost + labor cost

Area in square feet is length times width. Multiply area by each per-square-foot rate to get material and labor cost, then sum them. Set labor to zero for a do-it-yourself materials-only estimate.

Decking context

  • Decking materials include pressure-treated lumber, cedar, redwood and composite, each at different prices.
  • Many jurisdictions require a building permit for decks above a certain height; check your local code.
  • Per-square-foot rates from your supplier and contractor keep the estimate local and current.
  • Framing, footings and fasteners should be reflected in the material rate you enter.
  • Both materials and labor scale with area, so deck size is the dominant cost driver.

Deck cost: frequently asked questions

How is deck cost calculated?

Deck area equals length times width in feet. Material cost equals area times your price per square foot. Labor cost equals area times your labor rate per square foot. Total cost is materials plus labor. All rates are values you enter, so the estimate reflects your own quotes, not a national average.

What price per square foot should I use?

Material price depends heavily on the decking you choose: pressure-treated lumber, cedar, or composite each differ. Get a current price per square foot from your supplier and enter it. Because this calculator never hardcodes a price, your figure drives the result, keeping the estimate honest.

Does this include the substructure and footings?

The per-square-foot rates you enter should reflect everything you want included: decking boards, joists, beams, footings, fasteners and finish. If your supplier quotes only the boards, add a separate allowance for framing to the material rate so the total is complete.

How do I estimate labor?

Contractors often quote deck labor per square foot. Ask for that figure and enter it as the labor rate. If you are building it yourself, set labor to zero and the total reflects materials only. The calculator multiplies your labor rate by the deck area.

Why does deck size matter so much?

Both material and labor scale with area, so cost rises roughly with length times width. A 12 by 16 foot deck is 192 square feet; doubling either dimension roughly doubles the cost. Confirm your dimensions in feet before reading the total.
