Deck Joist Spacing Calculator
Deck joists support the decking boards and must be spaced closely enough for the board material and the load. This calculator works out how many joists you need across a deck of a given width at your chosen on-center spacing, the actual spacing once joists are evenly distributed, and reminds you of common maximum spacings by decking type. Always confirm joist size and span against an official deck-building guide such as the IRC or the American Wood Council DCA 6.
Deck joist spacing formula
Deck width (in) = deck width (ft) * 12
Number of spaces = ceiling( deck width (in) / target spacing )
Number of joists = number of spaces + 1
Actual on-center spacing = deck width (in) / number of spaces
Adding one to the number of spaces accounts for the joist at each end of the deck. Common on-center spacings are 16 inches for many decking types and 12 inches for some composite or diagonal-pattern installations. Always check the decking manufacturer and the official deck guide for the maximum spacing your boards allow.
Worked example
A 12 foot wide deck (the direction joists run across) is 144 inches. At 16 inch target spacing: number of spaces = ceiling(144 / 16) = 9. Number of joists = 9 + 1 = 10. Actual on-center spacing = 144 / 9 = 16.00 inches. So you install 10 joists spaced exactly 16 inches on center.
Deck joist spacing notes
- 16 inch on-center spacing is common for wood and many composite decks laid perpendicular to the joists.
- 12 inch spacing is often required for composite boards or when decking is run diagonally.
- Closer joist spacing produces a stiffer deck and allows longer maximum joist spans for a given lumber size.
- Always include the end joists: a 12 foot deck at 16 inches uses 10 joists, not 9.
- Confirm joist size, spacing, and span against the IRC or the American Wood Council DCA 6 prescriptive deck guide.
Deck Joist Spacing Calculator: frequently asked questions
How far apart should deck joists be?
16 inches on center is standard for wood and many composite decks. Composite boards or diagonally laid decking often require 12 inch spacing. Always confirm the maximum spacing for your specific decking with the manufacturer and the deck code.
How many joists do I need for a 12 foot deck?
Divide the deck width in inches by the spacing and round up to get the number of spaces, then add one for the closing end joist. A 12 foot (144 inch) wide deck at 16 inch spacing needs 10 joists.
Does closer joist spacing let me use smaller joists?
Closer spacing reduces the load each joist carries and allows a longer maximum span for a given lumber size, or a smaller joist for the same span. Always verify the exact span against an official deck span table.
Where can I find official deck joist span tables?
The American Wood Council publishes the DCA 6 prescriptive residential wood deck construction guide, and the International Residential Code includes deck provisions. Use these official sources to confirm joist size, spacing, and span for your deck.
