What is lockdown and when does it happen?
Lockdown is the final stretch before hatching when you stop turning the eggs, raise humidity, and avoid opening the incubator. For chickens it is usually the last three days, so around day 18 of a 21-day incubation. This calculator marks lockdown as three days before the hatch date by default.
How is the hatch date calculated?
The hatch date is simply the set date plus the incubation period in days. The lockdown date is the hatch date minus three days. The calculator also shows how many days remain until each milestone from today.
Why might my eggs hatch early or late?
Incubation temperature has a strong effect: slightly warm incubators tend to hatch early, slightly cool ones late. Humidity, egg size, and storage before setting also matter. Treat the predicted date as a target and watch for signs of hatching a day either side.
Should I help a chick that is struggling to hatch?
Generally no. Assisting too early can cause fatal bleeding if the chick has not finished absorbing its yolk and blood vessels. Hatching can take many hours. Only consider intervening in specific late-stage situations, ideally with guidance from an experienced breeder or your veterinarian.
