Egg Incubation Hatch Date Calculator

Incubation length depends on the species: about 21 days for chickens, 28 for most ducks and turkeys, and 23 for quail, among others. This calculator adds an editable incubation period (default 21 days for chickens) to the date you set the eggs to find the expected hatch date, and marks the lockdown day three days before hatching, when you stop turning, raise humidity, and keep the incubator closed. Enter the set date and adjust the incubation period and lockdown lead-time for your species. Temperature and humidity shift the real date by a day or so, so treat the prediction as a target.

Chicken 21, duck 28, turkey 28, quail 23 (varies by breed).

Hatch date formula

Hatch date = set date + incubation period (days)
Lockdown date = hatch date - lockdown lead-time (days)
Days to hatch = hatch date - today
Days to lockdown = lockdown date - today

Dates are computed by adding whole days to the set date. Use the species-specific incubation period and the lockdown lead-time recommended for your birds.

Incubation context

  • Chickens hatch in about 21 days; ducks and turkeys around 28.
  • Lockdown is usually the last three days: stop turning, raise humidity.
  • Warm incubators hatch early; cool ones hatch late.
  • Humidity, egg size, and storage before setting affect timing.
  • Avoid helping a chick hatch too early; it can be fatal.

Egg incubation: frequently asked questions

How long do eggs take to hatch?

Incubation length depends on the species. Common figures are about 21 days for chickens, 28 days for most ducks (around 35 for Muscovy), 28 days for turkeys, 28 days for geese (varies by breed), and 23 days for quail. Because it varies, the incubation period is an editable input here, defaulting to 21 days for chickens.

What is lockdown and when does it happen?

Lockdown is the final stretch before hatching when you stop turning the eggs, raise humidity, and avoid opening the incubator. For chickens it is usually the last three days, so around day 18 of a 21-day incubation. This calculator marks lockdown as three days before the hatch date by default.

How is the hatch date calculated?

The hatch date is simply the set date plus the incubation period in days. The lockdown date is the hatch date minus three days. The calculator also shows how many days remain until each milestone from today.

Why might my eggs hatch early or late?

Incubation temperature has a strong effect: slightly warm incubators tend to hatch early, slightly cool ones late. Humidity, egg size, and storage before setting also matter. Treat the predicted date as a target and watch for signs of hatching a day either side.

Should I help a chick that is struggling to hatch?

Generally no. Assisting too early can cause fatal bleeding if the chick has not finished absorbing its yolk and blood vessels. Hatching can take many hours. Only consider intervening in specific late-stage situations, ideally with guidance from an experienced breeder or your veterinarian.
