Engine RPM formula

Circumference (in) = pi * tire diameter
Wheel RPM = speed (mph) * 1,056 / circumference
Total reduction = gear ratio * final-drive ratio
Engine RPM = wheel RPM * total reduction

The factor 1,056 converts mph to inches per minute (63,360 inches per mile divided by 60). Wheel RPM times the combined gearing gives engine RPM.

How is engine RPM related to road speed?

Road speed sets how fast the wheels turn, and the drivetrain multiplies that by the transmission gear ratio and the final-drive (axle) ratio to give engine RPM. Larger gear or axle ratios and smaller tires raise RPM at a given speed; taller gearing and bigger tires lower it. This is the relationship that determines cruising RPM in each gear.

What is the formula for engine RPM?

Engine RPM equals speed in mph times 1,056 times the gear ratio times the final-drive ratio, divided by the product of pi and the tire diameter in inches. The 1,056 converts miles per hour to inches per minute (63,360 inches per mile divided by 60 minutes). The pi times diameter term is the tire circumference.

What is the difference between gear ratio and final drive?

The gear ratio is the ratio of the selected transmission gear, for example about 1.0 for a direct-drive top gear or higher numbers in lower gears. The final-drive ratio is the differential or axle ratio, such as 3.73 to 1. Total reduction is the gear ratio multiplied by the final drive, and both together convert wheel speed to engine speed.

Why does tire diameter affect RPM?

A larger tire covers more distance per rotation, so at the same road speed it turns more slowly, which lowers engine RPM for a fixed set of ratios. Switching to a taller tire effectively lengthens the gearing, dropping cruising RPM, while a shorter tire raises it. That is why tire size is part of the RPM calculation.

What is a good cruising RPM?

There is no single ideal; it depends on the engine. Many vehicles cruise comfortably in the low-to-mid thousands of RPM in top gear, balancing fuel economy, noise, and the engine staying in an efficient part of its range.
