Essential Oil Dilution Calculator

The essential oil dilution calculator helps aromatherapy enthusiasts and crafters calculate the safe number of drops of essential oil to add to a carrier oil. Proper dilution is essential for safe skin application: undiluted essential oils can cause chemical burns, sensitisation, or allergic reactions. The calculator is based on the standard of 20 drops per millilitre and supports common dilution percentages recommended by the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA). Select your use case to see the recommended dilution, or enter a custom percentage and carrier volume to get the exact drop count.

Dilution formula

EO volume (ml) = Carrier (ml) x (Dilution % / 100)
EO drops = EO volume (ml) x Drops per ml
Standard: 1 ml = 20 drops (Ph. Eur. dropper)

Example: 30 ml carrier at 2% = 0.6 ml EO = 12 drops

Frequently asked questions

What is a safe essential oil dilution for skin?

The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA) and Robert Tisserand's reference text recommend: 1% dilution for sensitive skin and children, 2% for daily adult use, 3 to 5% for specific targeted use, and up to 10% for short-term acute use (e.g., muscle pain). Never apply undiluted (neat) essential oils to skin without professional guidance.

How many drops are in 1 ml of essential oil?

A standard essential oil drop from a European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) dropper is approximately 0.05 ml, giving 20 drops per ml. This is the standard used by most aromatherapy resources and this calculator. Actual drop size varies slightly by oil viscosity and dropper design.

What is a carrier oil?

A carrier oil is a plant-based oil used to dilute essential oils before applying to skin. Common carrier oils include sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, fractionated coconut oil, grapeseed oil, and olive oil. The carrier carries the essential oil safely to the skin and reduces the risk of irritation.

Can I dilute essential oils in water?

Essential oils do not dissolve in water. Mixing essential oil in water creates a mixture where undiluted oil droplets contact the skin. Always use a true carrier oil, emulsifier, or alcohol for skin-safe dilution. If making a spray, add a solubiliser such as polysorbate 20 before adding water.

Is a higher dilution percentage stronger?

Yes. A 5% dilution has 5 ml of essential oil per 100 ml of carrier, which is 2.5 times stronger than a 2% dilution. For whole-body massage, 1 to 2% is standard. For a small area such as temples or a sore muscle, 3 to 5% may be used for a short period.
