Final Exam Grade Needed Calculator
Before walking into a final exam it helps to know exactly what score you need to hit your target course grade. Your overall grade is a weighted average: the work already done counts for one part, and the final exam counts for the rest. Rearranging that weighted average lets you solve for the one unknown, the final exam score. This calculator takes your current grade, your target grade, and the final's weight, then returns the exact score you must earn on the final, flagging cases where the target is already locked in or out of reach. The math is pure algebra, so the answer is exact.
Final exam formula
w = final weight / 100
required final = (target - current * (1 - w)) / w
grade if final = 0: current * (1 - w)
max overall: current * (1 - w) + 100 * w
The current grade is treated as the score on the non-final portion (which is 1 minus the weight of the course). The formula solves the weighted average for the unknown final score.
Reading the result
- A required score between 0 and 100 is achievable; aim a little higher for a margin of safety.
- A required score above 100 means the target needs extra credit or is out of reach with the final alone.
- A required score at or below 0 means your target is already secured before the final.
- The locked-in figure shows your overall grade if you scored nothing on the final.
- The max figure shows the best overall grade possible if you ace the final.
Final exam grade: frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the grade I need on my final?
The required final score equals your target grade minus your current grade times one minus the exam's weight, all divided by the exam's weight. In symbols: required = (target - current * (1 - weight)) / weight, where weight is the final's share of the course as a decimal. This isolates the score needed on just the final to hit your overall target.
What does the exam weight mean?
The exam weight is the percentage of your overall course grade that the final exam counts for, entered here as a percent (for example 30 means the final is worth 30 percent). The rest of your grade, 100 percent minus the weight, is already locked in as your current grade.
What if the required score is over 100?
If the result is above 100 percent, your target is not reachable with this final alone unless extra credit is available. The calculator still shows the exact number so you know how far out of reach the target is and can adjust expectations or seek extra credit.
What if the required score is negative or zero?
A result at or below zero means you have already secured your target grade no matter how you score on the final, assuming you submit it. The calculator shows the number so you can see how much cushion you have.
Does my current grade include the final already?
No. Enter the grade you have earned so far on everything except the final exam, as a percentage. The exam weight is the portion still outstanding. The formula assumes your current grade represents the non-final portion of the course completely.
