Fiscal Quarter Calculator

A fiscal quarter is one of the four three-month blocks an organization splits its financial year into, and because fiscal years can begin in any month they often do not line up with calendar quarters. The US federal government, for example, starts its fiscal year on 1 October, while many companies start in January or another month entirely. This calculator takes any date and the month your fiscal year starts, then returns the fiscal quarter, the quarter within the calendar year for comparison, and the fiscal-year label using the common convention that names the fiscal year for the calendar year in which it ends.

Fiscal quarter formula

offset = (month - start month + 12) mod 12 (0 to 11)
fiscal quarter = floor(offset / 3) + 1
calendar quarter = floor((month - 1) / 3) + 1
fiscal year (ends) = year + 1 if start month > 1 and month >= start month

Months are numbered 1 to 12. The offset counts whole months since the fiscal year began, wrapping past December. Quarter 1 covers offsets 0 to 2, quarter 2 covers 3 to 5, and so on.

Fiscal year notes

  • US federal fiscal year runs 1 October to 30 September.
  • Set start month to 1 to make fiscal quarters match calendar quarters.
  • The fiscal year is labelled by the calendar year in which it ends.
  • Retailers, governments, and schools commonly use non-calendar fiscal years.
  • Quarter boundaries are by month; the calculator does not split mid-month.

Fiscal quarter: frequently asked questions

What is a fiscal quarter?

A fiscal quarter is one of the four three-month periods that an organization divides its financial year into. Quarter 1 is the first three months of the fiscal year, quarter 2 the next three, and so on. The fiscal year may start in any month, so fiscal quarters often differ from calendar quarters.

When does the US federal fiscal year start?

The United States federal government fiscal year begins on 1 October and ends on 30 September of the following year, as set by law. So federal Q1 runs October to December. Many companies instead use a fiscal year matching the calendar year, starting in January. Set your own start month in the calculator.

How is the fiscal quarter calculated?

The calculator finds how many months have passed since the start of the fiscal year, wrapping around December if needed, then divides by three. Months 0 to 2 after the start are Q1, months 3 to 5 are Q2, months 6 to 8 are Q3, and months 9 to 11 are Q4.

How is the fiscal year labelled?

Conventions vary. A common rule, and the one the US federal government uses, labels the fiscal year by the calendar year in which it ends. So a fiscal year starting October 2025 and ending September 2026 is fiscal year 2026. The calculator shows both the ending-year label and the calendar year of the date.

Why does my company use a non-calendar fiscal year?

Organizations choose a fiscal year that suits their business cycle. Retailers often end after the holiday season, governments align to budget cycles, and educational bodies align to academic years. Picking a quieter period for year-end makes accounting, auditing, and inventory counts easier.
