Freezer Storage Time Calculator

Frozen food stays safe indefinitely at 0 degrees Fahrenheit, but its best quality lasts only so long. The USDA FoodKeeper gives a recommended best-quality storage time, in months, for each food. This calculator takes the date you froze the item and that recommended number of months, advances the calendar to find the best-by date, and counts the days remaining from today. The recommended months is your input because it differs by food, so the result is accurate to what you actually froze.

Freezer storage time formula

Best-by date = freeze date with month advanced by recommended months
Total storage window = best-by date - freeze date (in days)
Days remaining = best-by date - today (in days)
Weeks remaining = days remaining / 7

The month is advanced on the calendar and the year rolls over as needed. Days remaining is measured from today, so it falls as time passes and is reported as a quality window, not a safety deadline.

Freezer storage notes

  • Food held continuously at 0 degrees Fahrenheit stays safe indefinitely, per USDA guidance.
  • Recommended storage times are about quality and flavor, not safety.
  • The USDA FoodKeeper application lists best-quality times for each specific food.
  • A power outage that warms the freezer shortens the quality window.
  • Label each package with its freeze date so the best-by date can be tracked.

Freezer storage: frequently asked questions

How long can I keep food in the freezer?

Food kept at 0 degrees Fahrenheit stays safe indefinitely, but quality declines over time. The USDA FoodKeeper publishes recommended best-quality freezer storage times for each food, for example several months for many cooked dishes and longer for some raw cuts. Enter that recommended number of months and this calculator gives the best-by date.

What recommended storage time should I enter?

Use the figure for your specific food from the USDA FoodKeeper application or your product label, since it varies widely by item. The calculator does not assume a value because it differs from one food to another; you supply the months recommended for best quality so the date is correct for what you froze.

Is frozen food unsafe after the recommended time?

No. According to USDA guidance, food held continuously at 0 degrees Fahrenheit remains safe indefinitely. The recommended storage time is about quality, taste, and texture, not safety. After the best-by date the food may be drier or less flavorful but is still safe if it stayed frozen.

How is the best-by date calculated?

The calculator adds the recommended number of months to the freeze date by advancing the calendar month and year, keeping the same day of the month where possible. It then counts the days from today to that best-by date so you can see how much quality time remains.

Does a power outage change the date?

Yes. If the freezer rises above 0 degrees Fahrenheit, quality declines faster and partial thawing can affect safety. USDA guidance covers handling food after an outage. This calculator assumes continuous storage at 0 degrees Fahrenheit; reduce the recommended months if the food was not kept consistently frozen.
