Golf Handicap Index Calculator
The USGA Golf Handicap Index is calculated under the World Handicap System (WHS), which was unified globally in 2020. Your Handicap Index is the average of the best 8 score differentials from your most recent 20 rounds, multiplied by 0.96. Each score differential is calculated as (Adjusted Gross Score - Course Rating) x 113 / Slope Rating. Enter up to 20 score differentials below and the calculator will identify the best 8 and compute your Handicap Index.
Enter score differentials directly, or use the individual score calculator at the bottom to compute them from your gross score, course rating, and slope rating.
USGA Handicap Index formula (WHS)
Score Differential = (Adjusted Gross Score - Course Rating) × 113 / Slope Rating
Handicap Index = Average of best 8 out of 20 differentials × 0.96
With fewer than 20 rounds, the number of best differentials used scales down: 3-4 rounds use the 1 lowest; 5-6 use the lowest 2; 7-8 use the lowest 2; 9 use the lowest 3; and so on up to 20 rounds where 8 are used. This calculator uses all entered differentials, selects the best 8, and applies the 0.96 factor.
Handicap Index benchmarks
- 0.0 or below (plus handicap): Scratch or better golfer; plays at or above par.
- 0.0 to 5.0: Low handicapper; very strong amateur player.
- 5.0 to 15.0: Mid handicapper; solid recreational golfer.
- 15.0 to 25.0: High handicapper; typical casual golfer.
- Above 25.0: Beginner or infrequent player.
Golf handicap index: frequently asked questions
What is a Golf Handicap Index?
A Golf Handicap Index is a portable measure of a player's demonstrated ability on a golf course of standard difficulty. It is calculated from score differentials using the World Handicap System (WHS), which was adopted by the USGA and R&A in 2020 to create a universal global standard.
How is a Handicap Index calculated under WHS?
Under the World Handicap System, the Handicap Index is the average of the best 8 out of the most recent 20 score differentials, multiplied by 0.96. The 0.96 factor (known as the playing conditions calculation adjustment) ensures that handicaps reflect a player's potential rather than average performance.
What is a score differential?
A score differential = (Adjusted Gross Score - Course Rating) x (113 / Slope Rating). Course Rating is the expected score for a scratch golfer; Slope Rating (between 55 and 155, standard 113) measures the difficulty of the course for a bogey golfer relative to a scratch golfer.
How many rounds are needed for a Handicap Index?
The WHS can establish an initial Handicap Index from as few as 3 rounds. With 3 to 6 rounds, only the 1 or 2 best differentials are used. With 7 to 8 rounds, the best 2 are used. The full calculation using best 8 of 20 requires at least 20 rounds on record.
What is a good Golf Handicap Index?
A Handicap Index of 0 means a scratch golfer (expected to shoot par). Positive handicaps indicate strokes above par. A 10.0 handicap is good for a recreational player. The average male golfer in the US has a handicap around 14 to 16, and the average female around 27 to 29.
