Grade Point Trend Calculator
Cumulative GPA = Total quality points / Total credit hours attempted. This calculator lets you enter up to four semesters of GPA and credit hours, then computes your cumulative GPA and identifies whether your trend is improving, stable, or declining. Understanding your GPA trend helps with academic planning, scholarship applications, and graduate school preparation.
Enter term GPA (0.00-4.00) and credit hours for each semester:
GPA calculation formula
Quality Points(semester) = Term GPA x Credit Hours
Cumulative GPA = Sum of all Quality Points / Sum of all Credit Hours
Trend = Compare first term GPA to most recent term GPA
Standard 4.0-scale grade points
- A / A+ = 4.00
- A- = 3.70
- B+ = 3.30
- B = 3.00
- B- = 2.70
- C+ = 2.30
- C = 2.00
- D = 1.00
- F = 0.00
Frequently asked questions
How is cumulative GPA calculated?
Cumulative GPA = Total quality points earned / Total credit hours attempted. Quality points for each course = Grade points (e.g., A = 4.0, B = 3.0) x Credit hours for that course. You sum quality points across all courses and divide by total credit hours.
What does a GPA trend show?
A GPA trend compares your term GPA across successive semesters. An upward trend shows academic improvement over time. A downward trend may signal increasing difficulty or reduced engagement. Most graduate programs and employers look at cumulative GPA, but a strong upward trend can offset a weak early GPA.
How many credit hours does it take to raise a GPA significantly?
Because GPA is a weighted average, it takes many credit hours to move significantly. A student with a 2.50 cumulative GPA after 60 credits who earns a 4.00 each subsequent semester will reach approximately 3.00 after completing another 60 credits. The heavier your credit history, the more hours needed to shift your cumulative GPA.
Do AP or dual enrollment credits count toward college GPA?
Generally no. AP credits awarded by examination typically transfer as credit hours but not as grades, so they do not affect your GPA. Dual enrollment courses in which you received an actual college grade may count, depending on institutional policy.
What GPA is required for Latin honors?
Thresholds vary by institution. Typical conventions are: cum laude at 3.50, magna cum laude at 3.70, and summa cum laude at 3.90 on a 4.0 scale, but policies differ. Use the Honor Roll GPA Threshold Calculator on this site to check specific thresholds.
