Harmonic Mixing Key Calculator

Harmonic mixing keeps musical keys compatible when transitioning between tracks, preventing clashing chords and melodies. The Camelot Wheel system, widely used by DJs, arranges all 24 major and minor keys in a circle numbered 1 to 12 with letters A (minor) and B (major). Compatible keys are the same position, adjacent numbers on the same letter (one step around the circle), and the same number with the opposite letter (the relative major or minor). Select your current Camelot position and the calculator highlights all compatible next tracks.

Compatible keys:

Camelot Wheel compatibility rules

Same position: perfect match (same key)
+1 or -1 number, same letter: energy shift (circle of 5ths step)
Same number, opposite letter: relative major/minor blend

Moving clockwise (+1 number) on the Camelot Wheel raises energy. Moving counter-clockwise (-1) lowers energy. Switching letters at the same number moves between the relative major and minor, which share all the same notes.

Why harmonic mixing works

  • Relative major and minor keys share the same 7 notes, so blending them never creates clashes.
  • Adjacent Camelot numbers are a perfect fifth apart - the most consonant interval in music after the octave.
  • Moving two or more positions produces more dissonance and is used for intentional energy shifts.
  • The system allows DJs to prepare key-compatible setlists without music theory knowledge.

Harmonic mixing: frequently asked questions

What is the Camelot Wheel?

The Camelot Wheel is a notation system for harmonic mixing created by Mark Davis of Mixed In Key. It arranges the 24 major and minor keys in a circle so that adjacent keys (same number, plus or minus 1, or same number different letter) blend harmonically. Major keys use the letter B and minor keys use A.

Which keys are compatible for mixing?

Compatible keys from a given Camelot position: (1) same position (same key); (2) adjacent numbers on same letter (e.g. 8A and 7A or 9A); (3) same number opposite letter (relative major/minor, e.g. 8A and 8B). These give 4 compatible positions in total.

How does key compatibility affect a mix?

Playing two tracks in compatible keys allows their melodies and chords to blend without clashing. Incompatible keys produce dissonant-sounding clashes. Harmonic mixing is a technique used by DJs to create smooth, musical transitions.

What is energy boost mixing?

Moving up one Camelot number (e.g. 8A to 9A) creates an energy boost effect because the new key has a raised root note relative to the circle-of-fifths. Moving down one number has the opposite effect.

Is the Camelot system the same as the circle of fifths?

The Camelot Wheel is arranged to match the circle of fifths. Each step around the Camelot circle moves a perfect fifth (or fourth) around the circle of fifths. The numbering and A/B notation is specific to the Camelot system.
