A hay bale count calculator estimates how many bales a hay field will produce from the total hay yield and the average weight of each bale. A field yields 8,000 pounds of hay, baled into small square bales averaging 50 pounds each.

How much does a hay bale weigh?
It varies widely by bale type. Small square bales are often 40 to 60 pounds, large square bales hundreds to over a thousand pounds, and round bales commonly 800 to 1,500 pounds. Moisture and density also matter. Weigh a few of your own bales for an accurate average.
How do I find total field yield?
Multiply the per-acre hay yield by the acres cut. Hay yield is often quoted in tons per acre; convert to pounds (1 ton equals 2,000 pounds) before dividing by bale weight. For example, 2 tons per acre over 2 acres is 8,000 pounds.
Should I round the bale count?
In practice, yes, round up to a whole number because a partial bale still occupies storage and handling. This calculator shows the exact division; treat any fraction as one more bale when planning storage and transport.
Does moisture affect the count?
Yes. Wetter hay weighs more per bale and risks spoilage and heating. Bale weight should reflect hay baled at a safe moisture (commonly below about 20 percent for small bales). Use a representative bale weight at your storage moisture for the best count.
