International Shipping Cost Calculator

Estimate international shipping costs by entering package dimensions and weight. The calculator uses the IATA-standard volumetric weight formula (divisor 5,000 for express couriers), compares it to actual weight, and applies your carrier rate and fuel surcharge. The result is an estimated freight cost before customs duties and taxes.

International shipping formula (IATA standard)

Volumetric weight (kg) = (L cm * W cm * H cm) / divisor
Chargeable weight = max(actual weight, volumetric weight)
Base freight = chargeable weight * rate per kg
Fuel surcharge amount = base freight * (fuel surcharge% / 100)
Total freight = base freight + fuel surcharge amount

The IATA divisor of 5,000 applies to express courier air freight. General air cargo uses 6,000. Ocean freight uses lane-specific rates per cubic meter or per ton (whichever is greater). Customs duties, insurance, and destination fees are separate.

International shipping tips

  • Always include an accurate commercial invoice with the declared value in the currency of the transaction.
  • Check the Harmonized System (HS) tariff code for your goods before shipping to estimate customs duties at the destination.
  • Consider shipping insurance: carrier liability for international air freight is typically limited to approximately $20 per kilogram under the Montreal Convention.
  • Some countries restrict or prohibit certain goods; check the destination country's import regulations with the WCO or the relevant customs authority.
  • De minimis thresholds vary by country: shipments below a certain declared value may clear customs duty-free. The U.S. de minimis threshold is $800 (Section 321).

International shipping: frequently asked questions

How is international shipping cost calculated?

International shipping is priced on chargeable weight, which is the greater of actual weight and volumetric (DIM) weight. Volumetric weight = (L * W * H in cm) / 5,000 in kg, or (L * W * H in inches) / 139 in lbs for air freight. The carrier multiplies chargeable weight by the per-kg rate and adds surcharges.

What is the IATA volumetric weight standard?

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) standard for air freight volumetric weight is: volumetric weight (kg) = (length * width * height in cm) / 6,000 for air cargo. For international express couriers (DHL, FedEx, UPS), the divisor is typically 5,000. Check with your specific carrier.

What surcharges apply to international shipments?

Common surcharges include: fuel surcharge (typically 15% to 30% of base freight), remote area surcharge, peak season surcharge, extended area delivery, and insurance. Customs duties and import taxes are additional costs paid by the recipient or importer of record.

What is the difference between CIF and FOB pricing in international freight?

FOB (Free on Board) means the seller pays costs until goods are loaded on the vessel at origin. CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) means the seller pays freight and insurance to the destination port. CIF value is important for customs duty calculations, as duties are typically applied to the CIF value.

Do I need to declare the value of my international shipment?

Yes. Customs authorities in virtually all countries require a commercial invoice declaring the value of goods. Underdeclaration is illegal and can result in seizure, fines, and penalties. The declared CIF value is used by the importing country to calculate customs duty and import taxes.
