Leather Area Calculator

The leather area calculator helps leatherworkers, hobbyists, and small business makers estimate how much leather they need for a project and what it will cost. Leather is sold by the square foot, so you need to know the total area of all your cut pieces, including a waste allowance for irregular hides, scarring, and belly stretch. Enter up to four panel types with their dimensions and quantities, set a waste percentage, and the calculator gives you total area in square inches, square feet, and the material cost. This is useful for wallets, bags, belts, sheaths, journals, and any leather goods project.

Leather area formula

Panel area (sq in) = Width x Height x Quantity
Total net area = Sum of all panel areas
Total sq ft = Net area / 144
With waste = Total sq ft x (1 + Waste % / 100)
Cost = With waste sq ft x Price per sq ft

Frequently asked questions

How is leather sold and measured?

Leather is typically sold by the square foot in the United States. Whole hides vary from 15 to 25 square feet for cowhide, while smaller skins (lamb, pig) may be 4 to 8 square feet. Pre-cut panels are sold in specific sizes. Always measure your pattern pieces and add a waste factor for irregular hide shapes.

What waste factor should I use for leather?

A 20 to 30% waste factor is typical for leather, because natural hides have irregular shapes, uneven thickness, scarring, and belly areas that are too stretchy. Budget for 25% waste when cutting from whole hides, and 10 to 15% when cutting from flat pre-cut panels.

What is leather thickness measured in?

Leather thickness is measured in ounces (oz) in the US, where 1 oz equals approximately 0.4 mm (1/64 inch). A 4 oz leather is approximately 1.6 mm thick. European leatherworkers use millimetres directly. Selecting the right weight for the project is as important as surface area.

How do I calculate leather for a bifold wallet?

Measure each panel separately, add dimensions in square inches, then convert to square feet (divide by 144). A typical bifold wallet uses one outer panel, two inner panels, and card slots, totalling approximately 80 to 120 square inches (0.56 to 0.83 square feet) before waste allowance.

What is the cost of leather per square foot?

Leather prices vary enormously by type, grade, and finish. Vegetable-tanned cowhide suitable for tooling runs USD 5 to 12 per square foot. Chrome-tanned upholstery leather may be USD 3 to 7. Exotic leathers (ostrich, crocodile) can exceed USD 50 per square foot. Enter your actual price in the calculator for an accurate cost estimate.
