Model scale formula

Model size = real size / N
Real size = model size * N
Area factor = N squared
Volume factor = N cubed

The ratio is dimensionless, so the same factor works in any unit as long as you keep input and output in the same unit. Areas and volumes shrink faster than lengths.

Does the unit matter?

No. A scale ratio is dimensionless, so the same factor applies whether you measure in inches, feet, centimeters, or meters. Just keep the real and model measurements in the same unit, and the calculator returns the converted size in that unit.

How do I scale an area or volume?

Lengths scale by the ratio, but areas scale by the ratio squared and volumes by the ratio cubed. A 1:24 model has 1/24 the length, 1/576 the surface area, and 1/13,824 the volume of the real object. This calculator shows the area and volume factors alongside the length conversion.

Can I find the scale from two measurements?
