Mosaic Grout Calculator

The mosaic grout calculator helps artists and crafters determine how much grout to buy for a mosaic project. Grout fills the gaps between tesserae (mosaic tiles), and the amount needed depends on the total mosaic area, tile dimensions, tile spacing, and tile thickness. Underestimating grout is a common frustration because mid-project colour batches may not match. This calculator gives you a grout weight estimate in grams, pounds, and kilograms, with a waste allowance, so you can buy the right amount from the start. It works for glass tile mosaics, stone tile mosaics, ceramic tile mosaics, and mixed-media mosaic art.

Grout quantity formula

Tile pitch = Tile size + Joint width
Joint fraction = 1 - (Tile size / Tile pitch)^2
Grout volume (cu in) = Area x Tile thickness x Joint fraction
Grout density approx. 1.5 g/cm3 = 0.87 oz/cu in
Weight (oz) = Volume (cu in) x 0.87 x (1 + Waste/100)

Frequently asked questions

How is mosaic grout amount calculated?

Grout volume is based on the volume of the grout joints between tiles. The joint volume depends on joint width, tile thickness, and the ratio of joint area to tile area. Wider joints, thinner tiles, and smaller tiles all increase the amount of grout needed.

What type of grout should I use for mosaics?

Unsanded grout is used for joints up to 1/8 inch (3 mm) wide. Sanded grout is used for joints 1/8 inch and wider. For small mosaic tesserae (tiles under 1 cm), non-sanded grout is typically preferred as sanded grout can scratch glass and polished stone tiles.

What is the density of dry grout powder?

Dry cement-based grout powder has a bulk density of approximately 1.1 to 1.4 g/cm3. When mixed with water, the workable slurry is less dense but the cured, dried grout is approximately 1.6 to 1.9 g/cm3. This calculator uses 1.5 g/cm3 as a reasonable average for pre-mixed calculations.

How much grout waste should I add for a mosaic?

Add 10 to 15% extra grout for a flat mosaic panel. For three-dimensional forms, curved surfaces, or irregular gaps, add 20 to 25%. Grout can also dry out in the bucket if you work slowly, so buying slightly more than calculated is always wise.

How long does grout take to cure on a mosaic?

Standard Portland cement-based grout reaches usable hardness in 24 to 72 hours. Full cure takes 28 days. Wait at least 24 to 48 hours before sealing grout. Epoxy grout cures faster (4 to 24 hours) but is more expensive and less forgiving to apply.
