Nutrition Label per Serving Calculator

To label a homemade recipe you divide the whole-batch totals by the number of servings, then express each per-serving amount as a percent of the FDA Daily Value. This calculator takes your total calories and one nutrient total, divides by servings, and reports the per-serving figures along with percent Daily Value and percent of the calorie reference. The Daily Value and calorie reference are editable so you can use the correct FDA reference for the nutrient you are labelling.

Per-serving formula

calories per serving = total calories / servings
nutrient per serving = total nutrient / servings
percent Daily Value = nutrient per serving / Daily Value * 100
percent of calorie reference = calories per serving / calorie reference * 100

Divide each whole-recipe total by the number of servings, then compare the per-serving nutrient with its FDA Daily Value. Use the correct editable Daily Value for the nutrient you are labelling.

Worked example: sodium

  • 1,600 total calories over 8 servings is 200 calories per serving.
  • 4,600 mg sodium over 8 servings is 575 mg per serving.
  • Against a 2,300 mg Daily Value that is 575 / 2,300 times 100 = 25 percent DV.
  • 200 calories is 200 / 2,000 times 100 = 10 percent of the calorie reference.
  • Change the Daily Value input for other nutrients such as total fat or fibre.

Nutrition labelling: frequently asked questions

How do I find the per-serving amount?

Divide the total amount of each nutrient in the whole recipe or package by the number of servings it makes. If a batch contains 1,600 calories and serves 8, each serving has 1,600 divided by 8 = 200 calories. This calculator does that for calories and one nutrient you choose.

What is percent Daily Value?

Percent Daily Value (percent DV) tells you how much a serving contributes to a daily diet, based on the FDA's Daily Values for a 2,000 calorie reference. It is the per-serving amount divided by the Daily Value, times 100. The Daily Value here is editable so you can use the correct reference for your chosen nutrient.

What is the calorie reference?

FDA nutrition labels use a 2,000 calorie per day reference for the general population, noted on the label as a footnote. Individual calorie needs vary, but 2,000 is the value used to compute percent Daily Values on US labels. You can change the calorie reference in this calculator.

Why are the Daily Values editable?

Each nutrient has its own Daily Value (for example sodium and total fat differ), and the FDA updates these reference amounts periodically. Making the Daily Value an input keeps the percent DV accurate for whichever nutrient and reference you are working with, rather than assuming one fixed number.
