Oil Change Cost Calculator
Enter your annual mileage, oil change interval, and cost per service to find out how many oil changes you need per year and what you will spend annually and over 5 years. The calculator also shows your cost per mile for oil changes alone. You can edit the cost field to reflect your actual local price or a DIY cost, and adjust the interval to match your owner's manual recommendation.
Oil change cost formula
Changes per year = Annual_miles / Change_interval
Annual cost = Changes_per_year x Cost_per_change
5-year cost = Annual_cost x 5
Cost per mile = Cost_per_change / Change_interval
The change interval should come from your owner's manual, not general advice. Manufacturers test oils with their specific engine tolerances and publish the interval that maintains the warranty.
Conventional vs synthetic oil change cost comparison
- Conventional oil at 5,000 miles: typically $35 to $55 per change, 3 changes per year at 15,000 miles = $105 to $165 per year.
- Full synthetic oil at 7,500 miles: typically $65 to $100 per change, 2 changes per year = $130 to $200 per year.
- Full synthetic oil at 10,000 miles: $65 to $100 per change, 1.5 changes per year = $98 to $150 per year.
- DIY full synthetic at 10,000 miles: roughly $30 to $50 per change, 1.5 changes per year = $45 to $75 per year.
Oil change cost calculator: frequently asked questions
How often should I change my oil?
Most modern vehicles using full synthetic oil are rated for 7,500 to 10,000 miles between changes, or up to 12 months, whichever comes first. Vehicles using conventional oil typically need changes every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Always follow the interval specified in your owner's manual, which reflects the manufacturer's engineering requirements for your specific engine.
What is the difference between conventional, synthetic blend, and full synthetic oil?
Conventional oil is refined from crude petroleum and suited for older engines running standard driving cycles. Synthetic blend mixes conventional and synthetic base stocks for improved performance. Full synthetic oil is engineered at the molecular level for longer service intervals, better cold-start performance, and higher temperature stability. Full synthetic typically costs 2 to 3 times more per change but allows longer intervals.
How much does an oil change cost at a shop?
According to AAA, the average oil change price in the US ranges from about $35 to $75 for conventional oil and $65 to $125 for full synthetic, depending on the vehicle and region. Prices vary significantly by location, shop type, and whether the oil filter is included. This calculator uses a user-editable labor cost so you can enter your actual local price.
Can I save money by doing my own oil changes?
Yes. A DIY oil change for a typical 5-quart passenger car costs roughly $25 to $50 for full synthetic oil and filter combined. You save the labor charge but need tools (drain pan, wrench, funnel) and must comply with local regulations for used-oil disposal. Many auto-parts stores accept used motor oil for free recycling.
Does driving style affect oil change frequency?
Yes. The owner's manual usually defines a severe service schedule for towing, repeated short trips under 5 miles, extreme hot or cold climates, dusty conditions, and stop-and-go city driving. Severe-service intervals are typically half the normal interval. Using the normal interval when severe-service conditions apply can lead to accelerated engine wear.
