Party Drink Quantity Calculator
Buying for a party is a guessing game until you put numbers on it. This calculator estimates the total drinks you will need from the number of guests, how long the event runs, and an average drinks per guest per hour that you set. It then splits the total across beer, wine, and soft drinks using percentages you choose, so your shopping list matches your crowd. Always plan generous non-alcoholic options and round each category up to whole packs. Every input is editable, so nothing is assumed about how your guests drink.
Party drink formula
Total drinks = guests * hours * drinks per guest per hour
Beer servings = total drinks * (beer share / 100)
Wine servings = total drinks * (wine share / 100)
Soft drink servings = total drinks * (soft drink share / 100)
If your three shares do not add to 100, each category is still computed from its own percentage, so check that the parts make sense together.
Planning tips
- Plan about one drink per guest in the first hour, then roughly one per hour after.
- Always provide ample water and non-alcoholic options for everyone.
- Round each category up to whole packs, bottles, or cans when shopping.
- Daytime and family events usually need a lower drinks-per-hour rate.
- Keep a small surplus; leftover sealed drinks keep for the next gathering.
Party drinks: frequently asked questions
How does the party drink calculator work?
It multiplies the number of guests by the party length in hours and by an average drinks per guest per hour to estimate total drinks needed. You then split that total across categories using percentages you choose, so you can plan how much beer, wine, soft drinks, and other beverages to buy.
How many drinks per hour should I plan for?
A common planning rule is about one drink per guest in the first hour and roughly one per hour after that, so an average near one drink per guest per hour works for many gatherings. Adjust upward for a longer, livelier event or downward for a daytime or family gathering. The field is editable.
How do the category percentages work?
Enter the share of total drinks you expect for each category. The calculator multiplies each percentage by the total drinks to give a count per category. If your percentages do not add to 100, the tool still computes each share from your numbers, so review the totals.
Does this include non-alcoholic options?
Yes. Always plan non-alcoholic choices such as water and soft drinks for designated drivers, non-drinkers, and to keep guests hydrated. Set a soft-drink percentage that fits your crowd. The calculator does not assume anyone drinks alcohol.
Should I round up?
Yes. Drinks come in fixed pack sizes, and running out is worse than a small surplus. Round each category up to the nearest pack or bottle when you shop. The calculator shows the raw estimate so you can add a buffer.
