Podcast Revenue Calculator

Podcast advertising revenue is calculated using the CPM (cost per mille) model: you earn a set rate for every 1,000 episode downloads. Enter your monthly downloads, episodes per month, CPM rate, and number of ad slots per episode to see your monthly and annual ad revenue. Add any flat-fee sponsorship deals or listener membership income to arrive at a total annual figure.

Podcast CPM revenue formula

Downloads Per Episode = Monthly Downloads / Episodes Per Month
CPM Revenue Per Episode = (Downloads Per Episode / 1,000) x CPM Rate x Ad Slots
Monthly CPM Revenue = CPM Revenue Per Episode x Episodes Per Month
Monthly Total = Monthly CPM + Flat Sponsorships + Memberships
Annual Total = Monthly Total x 12

CPM is measured per-episode using the IAB Podcast Technical Measurement Guidelines v2.1 standard. Downloads are counted as per-episode, not cumulative across episodes.

How to grow podcast revenue

  • Grow downloads: every additional 1,000 monthly downloads at a $25 CPM with 2 ad slots adds $50/month ($600/year) in revenue.
  • Negotiate CPM directly: going direct to advertisers rather than through a network typically yields 30 to 50 percent higher CPMs.
  • Add a Patreon or premium tier: listener memberships diversify income and provide predictable monthly revenue independent of download counts.
  • Improve episode retention: advertisers pay more for mid-roll placements because listeners who reach the middle have higher purchase intent.
  • Seasonal sponsorships: niche podcasts often command 2 to 3 times the CPM of general-interest shows because of tightly defined audiences.

Podcast revenue: frequently asked questions

What is CPM in podcasting?

CPM stands for cost per mille (cost per thousand downloads). Advertisers pay a CPM rate for every 1,000 episode downloads. Standard podcast CPM rates range from $15 to $50 per thousand downloads for host-read ads, with niche business and technology podcasts commanding the higher end of this range.

How many downloads do you need to get podcast sponsors?

Most podcast advertising networks require a minimum of 1,000 downloads per episode to qualify for CPM advertising. Direct sponsorships from brands in your niche may begin at lower download levels if the audience is highly targeted. Some podcasters with 500 downloads per episode earn $500 to $1,000 per episode through direct outreach.

What other revenue streams do podcasters use?

Beyond CPM advertising, podcasters earn from: listener memberships (Patreon, Supercast), premium or paid content, live events and ticket sales, merchandise, affiliate marketing commissions, online courses sold to the audience, and consulting or coaching services. This calculator estimates advertising revenue; add other streams manually.

What is the difference between downloads and listens?

A download is counted each time an episode file is requested from a server; a listen or play is counted when a listener plays the episode in a podcast app. IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau) podcast measurement guidelines v2.1 define a download as the standard for advertising reporting because it is more reliable to measure than a play.

How does a mid-roll ad differ from a pre-roll ad in terms of CPM?

Pre-roll ads appear at the beginning of an episode and command a CPM of roughly $15 to $25. Mid-roll ads appear in the middle of content, where listener retention is highest, and command a CPM of $25 to $50 or more. Post-roll ads are the cheapest, typically $10 to $15 CPM. Most episodes include one or two mid-roll placements for maximum revenue.
