Point Differential Calculator

Point differential is one of the most reliable indicators of team quality in sports analytics. It is calculated as total points scored minus total points allowed over a season or set of games. Teams with large positive differentials are generally stronger than their win-loss record may suggest, while teams with negative differentials often underperform their talent level. Enter points for and points against totals to calculate total differential and per-game differential.

Point differential formula

Total PD = Points For - Points Against
Per-Game PD = Total PD / Games Played
PPG Scored = Points For / Games Played
PPG Allowed = Points Against / Games Played

Point differential is applied universally across all major sports. In football, it is sometimes called "margin of victory." In soccer, it is called "goal difference." The calculation is identical regardless of sport.

Per-game differential benchmarks

  • NBA: Above +5.0 per game is championship contender level.
  • NFL: Above +6.0 per game is an elite team.
  • MLB: Above +0.5 runs per game is a strong playoff contender.
  • NHL: Above +0.5 goals per game is excellent for a full season.
  • Negative per-game differential across most sports correlates strongly with missing the playoffs.

Point differential: frequently asked questions

What is point differential in sports?

Point differential (PD) is the difference between total points scored and total points allowed over a season or set of games. A positive differential means a team scores more than it concedes. Point differential is a stronger predictor of future performance than win-loss record alone.

Why is point differential more predictive than wins?

Win-loss records can be skewed by performance in close games, which is largely random over small samples. Point differential captures the overall quality of performance and is less susceptible to luck. Teams with strong differentials tend to have better future records than teams with identical win-loss records but worse differentials.

How is point differential per game calculated?

Point differential per game = Total Points Scored - Total Points Allowed) / Games Played. This normalizes for teams that have played different numbers of games.

What is a good point differential in the NFL?

In the NFL, a team with a point differential above +100 over a 17-game season is a strong Super Bowl contender. A differential near 0 indicates a borderline playoff team. A differential below -50 is typical of a team in rebuilding mode. Division winners average around +50 to +80.

What is a good point differential in the NBA?

In the NBA over an 82-game season, a point differential per game above +5.0 is excellent, typical of championship contenders. Around +3.0 to +5.0 is a good playoff team. Near 0 to +3.0 is a bubble playoff team. Negative per-game differentials are typical of lottery teams.
