Price Per Ounce Calculator

The package that looks like the better deal often is not, and the only reliable way to tell is to compare unit prices. This calculator finds the price per ounce by dividing the total shelf price of a product by its net weight or volume in ounces. Reducing each option to a single price per ounce strips away the distraction of package size, so you can see which truly costs less for the same amount. Enter the price and the ounces for one product, then repeat for a rival, and compare the two figures directly. It works for ounces by weight or fluid ounces, as long as you use the same unit for both. The net weight is printed on the label. A lower price per ounce is normally the better buy, but only if you will use the product before it spoils and have room to store it; for perishables, a cheaper bulk pack can waste money if some is thrown away. Use it to settle the big-versus-small package question. Every figure here is computed deterministically from the standard unit-price formula, shown in full below, with a worked example that reconciles exactly to the calculator so you can follow each step.

Price per ounce is the total price divided by the ounces: price per ounce = price / ounces. A $24.00 package holding 32 ounces costs $0.75 per ounce.

Price per ounce formula

Price per ounce = price / ounces
price = total shelf price ($)
ounces = net weight or volume (oz)
Use the same unit for both items you compare

Dividing the price by the number of ounces gives the unit price, the cost of one ounce, which is comparable across package sizes.

Worked example

A package priced at 24 dollars holding 32 ounces.

  1. Take the price: 24
  2. Take the ounces: 32
  3. Divide: 24 / 32 = 0.75
  4. Price per ounce = $0.75

The unit price is 0.75 dollars per ounce. These are the calculator's default inputs, so the result above matches the widget exactly.

A larger pack at the same price has a lower unit price.

Price per ounce calculator: frequently asked questions

What is price per ounce?

Price per ounce is the total price of a product divided by its weight or volume in ounces. It is a unit price that lets you compare different package sizes on the same basis. A 24 dollar package holding 32 ounces costs 0.75 dollars per ounce.

Why compare unit prices?

The bigger or cheaper-looking package is not always the better deal. Reducing everything to a price per ounce strips away package size and lets you see which option truly costs less for the same amount, which is the heart of value shopping.

Does this work for fluid ounces too?

Yes. As long as you use the same unit for both products, the comparison is valid, whether that is ounces by weight or fluid ounces by volume. Just be sure not to mix weight ounces with fluid ounces, since they measure different things.

Where do I find the weight or volume?

The net weight or volume is printed on the package label, often near the brand name or on the bottom. Enter that number of ounces along with the shelf price, and the calculator returns the price per ounce.

Is a lower price per ounce always best?

Usually, but not always. A lower unit price is only a saving if you will use the product before it spoils and have somewhere to store it. For perishable goods, the cheaper-per-ounce bulk pack can cost more if some is thrown away.
