Quiz Score Calculator

Scoring a quiz is straightforward: your percentage is correct answers divided by total questions, times 100. This calculator returns that percentage, tells you whether you meet a passing threshold you set, counts how many correct answers you would need to pass, and shows your error count. It works equally for question-count quizzes and points-based tests, since the percentage formula is the same. Enter your numbers and see your result and your margin to the pass mark at a glance.

Quiz score formula

Score (%) = (correct / total) * 100
Incorrect = total - correct
Correct needed to pass = round up of (pass % / 100 * total)
Margin to pass = score % - pass %

The percentage is correct divided by total, times 100. The correct-needed figure rounds up because you cannot answer a fraction of a question. A positive margin means you passed; a negative margin shows how far short you are.

Scoring context

  • The same formula works for points-based and question-count quizzes.
  • Passing thresholds vary by course; enter the one that applies.
  • For negative marking, enter your net points and the maximum possible.
  • Correct-needed rounds up since partial questions are not possible.
  • A percentage is a ratio out of 100 by definition, needing no source.

Quiz scores: frequently asked questions

How is a quiz score percentage calculated?

The percentage is the number of correct answers divided by the total number of questions, multiplied by 100. If you answered 18 of 20 questions correctly, your score is 18 divided by 20 times 100, which is 90 percent. This calculator does that and shows the result instantly.

How many more answers do I need to pass?

The calculator compares your current correct count to the number needed to reach the passing percentage you set. It reports how many of the remaining questions you must answer correctly to pass, so you know your margin before finishing or retaking a quiz.

How do points-based quizzes work here?

If your quiz uses points rather than equally weighted questions, enter points earned as the correct value and total points available as the total. The percentage formula is identical, since points earned divided by points available times 100 gives the same percentage.

What passing percentage should I use?

The passing threshold depends on your school, course, or certification. Common thresholds are 60, 70, or 80 percent, but you should use the one your assessment specifies. The calculator lets you enter any passing percentage and tells you whether your score meets it.

Does this handle negative marking?

Not directly. If your quiz deducts points for wrong answers, first compute your net points after deductions, then enter that net figure as points earned and the maximum possible as the total. The percentage will then reflect the penalty.
