Rabbit Hutch Size Calculator
Calculate minimum hutch dimensions for your rabbit based on its body length. The USDA Animal Welfare Act (9 CFR 3.53) requires that the primary enclosure provides at least 1.5 times the rabbit's body length in width and depth. Additional space is needed for exercise runs. Enter the rabbit's body length (nose to tail base) and the number of rabbits to see minimum hutch dimensions in centimetres and inches.
Hutch size formula (USDA AWA 9 CFR 3.53)
Minimum width (cm) = body length (cm) x 1.5
Minimum depth (cm) = body length (cm) x 1.5
Minimum height (cm) = body length (cm) x 1.0 (upright posture)
(Add 50% of floor area for each additional rabbit)
The USDA Animal Welfare Act regulation 9 CFR 3.53 specifies space requirements for rabbits in primary enclosures. Height must allow a rabbit to sit upright on its haunches. The Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund (RWAF) recommends a hutch attached to a run as a minimum, not the hutch alone.
Rabbit size reference by breed
- Dwarf breeds (Netherland Dwarf, Mini Rex): 25-35 cm body length
- Small breeds (Dutch, Mini Lop): 35-45 cm body length
- Medium breeds (Rex, Angora): 45-55 cm body length
- Large breeds (New Zealand White, Californian): 55-65 cm body length
- Giant breeds (Flemish Giant): 65-95 cm body length
Rabbit hutch size calculator: frequently asked questions
What is the minimum hutch size for a rabbit?
The Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund (RWAF) in the UK recommends a minimum hutch size of at least 6 ft x 2 ft x 2 ft (180 cm x 60 cm x 60 cm) for an average-sized rabbit, permanently attached to a run of at least 8 ft x 4 ft. The USDA AWA (9 CFR 3.53) requires floor space of at least 1.5 times the rabbit's body length in each horizontal dimension.
How does the USDA AWA calculate rabbit space requirements?
Under 9 CFR 3.53, primary enclosures for rabbits must provide at least 1.5 times the rabbit's body length in both width and depth. For a 50 cm (20 in) rabbit, minimum width and depth = 75 cm (30 in). Height must allow the rabbit to stand fully upright on its haunches.
How tall should a rabbit hutch be?
The hutch height should allow the rabbit to stand fully upright on its haunches without its ears touching the top. Most medium rabbits require at least 45-60 cm interior height. Large breeds (Flemish Giant) need at least 75-90 cm height.
Do rabbits need a separate run attached to the hutch?
Yes. The RWAF recommends that a hutch alone is not sufficient. Rabbits need at least 3-4 hours of exercise per day in a run. The recommended minimum run attached to a hutch is 8 ft x 4 ft (240 cm x 120 cm) with the hutch counting as part of the living space.
Are these the only rabbits that need more space?
No. Large breeds (over 5 kg), multiple rabbits, and house rabbits all need proportionally more space. The RWAF states that 'a hutch is not enough' and recommends thinking of the hutch as a bedroom within a larger enclosed environment rather than the total living space.
