Reading Speed and Comprehension Calculator
Enter the word count of a text (or estimate it from pages) and your reading speed in words per minute. The calculator tells you how long it will take to read the entire text and how your speed compares to population benchmarks. Use the timed reading section to calculate your actual WPM from a sample passage.
Reading time estimator
Calculate your WPM (optional)
Reading time formula
Reading time (minutes) = Word count / Reading speed (WPM)
Reading time (hours) = Reading time (minutes) / 60
Your WPM = (Sample word count / Sample seconds) x 60
Sessions = Reading time (minutes) / Session length (minutes)
Reading speed benchmarks (research literature)
- Grade 3: 100-150 WPM (oral), ~100 WPM (silent)
- Grade 6: 150-200 WPM
- Grade 8: 200-250 WPM
- Average adult: 200-300 WPM
- College student: 250-350 WPM
- Proficient reader: 300-400 WPM
- Speed reader: 400-700 WPM (with reduced comprehension above 500 WPM)
- Average printed page: approximately 250-300 words
Frequently asked questions
What is the average adult reading speed?
Research studies (including meta-analyses published in journals such as Reading Research Quarterly) consistently find that average adult reading speed is approximately 200-300 words per minute (WPM) for non-fiction prose with good comprehension. College students average around 250-300 WPM. Speed readers may reach 400-700 WPM, but comprehension typically declines at higher speeds.
How do I calculate how long it takes to read a book?
Reading time (minutes) = Word count / Reading speed (WPM). For a 90,000-word novel read at 250 WPM, that is 360 minutes, or 6 hours. The average printed book page contains approximately 250-300 words.
Does reading speed affect comprehension?
Yes. Reading research shows a trade-off between speed and comprehension. Most studies find that sustained comprehension rates above 70-80% require reading at or below approximately 500-600 WPM. Claims of reading thousands of WPM with full comprehension have not been supported in peer-reviewed controlled research.
How many words are in a typical book?
Word counts vary by genre: a short novel is typically 50,000-80,000 words; a standard novel 80,000-100,000 words; a non-fiction business book 50,000-70,000 words; a typical academic textbook chapter 5,000-15,000 words. A typical 8.5 x 11 double-spaced page in academic writing is approximately 250 words.
How can I improve my reading speed without sacrificing comprehension?
Evidence-based techniques include: eliminating subvocalization (inner speech while reading), using a pointer or finger to guide eye movement, expanding peripheral vision to read multiple words per fixation, and practicing with progressively longer texts. The Accredited Institutes of Higher Education recommend improving comprehension first before attempting to increase speed.
