Reading Time by Page Count Calculator
Whether you are scheduling a book into your reading plan, estimating how long a report will take to review, or planning a reading sprint, knowing the time requirement in advance helps you allocate calendar blocks accurately. This calculator converts page count into total word count using a configurable words-per-page estimate, then divides by your reading speed in words per minute. It returns total minutes, total hours, and the number of 30-minute reading sessions needed, so you can slot the material into your week with precision.
Reading time formula
Total words = pages * words per page
Reading time (minutes) = total words / WPM
Reading time (hours) = reading time (minutes) / 60
30-minute sessions = ceil(reading time (minutes) / 30)
WPM is words per minute. The ceiling function ensures partial sessions are counted as full sessions. Default values use the publishing industry standard of 250 words per page and the benchmark adult reading speed of 250 WPM.
Reading speed benchmarks
- Average adult (comprehension reading): 200-250 WPM.
- Fast readers: 300-400 WPM.
- Technical or legal material: 100-150 WPM.
- Academic textbook (studying): 150-200 WPM.
- Recreational fiction: 250-350 WPM for most adults.
Reading time: frequently asked questions
What is the average adult reading speed?
Research published in peer-reviewed journals consistently estimates average adult silent reading speed at 200-250 words per minute (WPM) for comprehension. Speed readers trained in techniques can reach 400-700 WPM, often with reduced comprehension. The National Reading Panel and similar educational research bodies cite 250 WPM as a standard benchmark for adult fluent readers.
How many words are on a typical book page?
The average trade paperback page contains approximately 250-300 words. Academic and reference texts tend to have more words per page (300-350) due to smaller fonts and tighter formatting. Children's books have far fewer. This calculator defaults to 250 words per page, which is a standard estimate used in publishing.
Does reading type affect speed?
Yes, significantly. Recreational reading of narrative fiction tends to be faster because vocabulary and sentence structure are simpler. Technical, academic, and legal texts require more cognitive processing per word and are typically read at 100-150 WPM. Adjust the WPM field to match your reading type for a more accurate estimate.
How do I find my personal reading speed?
Time yourself reading a known passage for 1 minute. Count the words read (or use a word counter on the text). That number is your WPM. Repeat for different text types. Most people read technical material at roughly 60-70% of their fiction reading speed.
Why does the calculator separate page count from word count?
Page count is the most readily available metric for books and printed documents, but reading time is driven by word count, not page count. The calculator converts pages to words using your specified words-per-page figure, making it applicable to both physical books (where only page count is shown) and digital documents (where word count is directly available).
