Worked example

- Volume: 4 x 1.5 x 5.10 = 30.60 cu mm
- Weight: (30.60 / 1,000) x 13.0 = 0.0306 x 13.0 = 0.40 g (rounded)

How much does each ring size add?
On the common US scale, each whole size adds about 2.55 millimeters to the inner circumference of the band, which corresponds to roughly 0.8 millimeters of diameter. This calculator uses 2.55 millimeters per size to find the added length of metal.
What density should I use?
It depends on the metal. Sterling silver is about 10.4, 14 karat gold around 13, 18 karat gold around 15.5, and platinum around 21.4 grams per cubic centimeter. Enter the value for your specific alloy, since color and karat change the density.
Does this work for sizing down?
This calculator estimates metal added when sizing up. Sizing down removes a length of metal instead, and the same geometry applies to the amount removed, but the labor and finishing differ. For sizing down, treat the result as the metal taken out.
Why allow extra metal?
Resizing involves cutting, inserting a piece of stock, soldering, then filing and polishing to blend the join. Some metal is lost to filing and cleanup, so a jeweler uses slightly more stock than the bare volume the geometry suggests.
Can every ring be resized?
Many can, but rings with stones set all the way around (eternity bands), certain tension settings, or some non-metal materials are difficult or impossible to resize. A jeweler should assess the specific ring before resizing, regardless of the metal amount.
