Rowing Split Calculator

The 500-metre split is the universal pace metric in rowing, used on Concept2 ergometers and in competitive race planning worldwide. Whether you are targeting a personal best on the erg, planning race splits for a regatta, or comparing your speed across different distances, this calculator converts between total time, distance, and 500m split instantly. Enter any two of the three variables to find the third. It also calculates your power output in watts from your split, using the standard Concept2 watt conversion formula, and shows your speed in metres per second and kilometres per hour for context.

Rowing split formula

Split (s per 500m) = (Total time in seconds / Distance in metres) x 500
Total Time (s) = Split (s) x Distance / 500
Power (W) = 2.8 / (Split / 500)^3

Frequently asked questions

What is a rowing split?

A rowing split is the time taken to row 500 metres. It is the standard pace metric used on Concept2 ergometers and in competitive rowing. A split of 2:00 means you are rowing 500 metres every 2 minutes, or 2 km every 8 minutes.

What is a good 2000m rowing time?

For adult males, a 2000m time under 6:30 is competitive club level; under 6:00 is national level. For adult females, under 7:20 is competitive; under 7:00 is national level. These correspond to splits of approximately 1:37.5 to 1:45 for males.

How do I pace a 2000m rowing race?

Most coaches recommend going out 1 to 2 seconds per 500m faster than target average split in the first 250 metres, settling to target split from 250 to 1750 metres, then sprinting the final 250 metres. Even or negative splits produce the fastest times.

What is the Concept2 ranking system?

Concept2 maintains a worldwide online ranking for ergometer performances at standard distances (100m, 500m, 1000m, 2000m, 5000m, 6000m, 10000m, 60 min, half marathon, marathon). Rankings are split by age category, weight class, and year.

How do I convert split to watts on the rowing machine?

Power (watts) = 2.8 / (split in seconds / 500)^3. For a 2:00 split (120 seconds per 500m): Power = 2.8 / (120/500)^3 = 2.8 / 0.014 = approximately 200 watts. Concept2 displays both metrics simultaneously.
