Satoshi to Bitcoin Converter
This converter lets you instantly convert between satoshis, bits, millibitcoins (mBTC), and full Bitcoin (BTC), and shows the USD value at a price you enter. Edit any field and all others update automatically. The conversion ratios are fixed by the Bitcoin protocol: 1 BTC = 100,000,000 satoshis exactly.

When to use different Bitcoin units
- Satoshis (sats): ideal for Lightning Network payments, small tip amounts, and discussions about transaction fees.
- Bits (uBTC): useful when Bitcoin is priced above $10,000, as 1 bit equals approximately $0.01-$0.10 at those prices.
- mBTC: used by some wallets and exchanges as a mid-range denomination; 1 mBTC = 0.001 BTC.
- BTC: standard for large amounts, exchange prices, and on-chain transactions.
Satoshi and Bitcoin: frequently asked questions
What is a satoshi?
A satoshi (sat) is the smallest unit of Bitcoin, named after Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto. One Bitcoin equals exactly 100,000,000 satoshis (one hundred million satoshis). Satoshis make it possible to transact in very small fractions of a Bitcoin without needing decimal notation.
How many satoshis are in one Bitcoin?
Exactly 100,000,000 satoshis = 1 BTC. This is defined in the Bitcoin protocol. The conversion is: 1 sat = 0.00000001 BTC. Other denominations: 1 bit = 100 satoshis = 0.000001 BTC; 1 mBTC (millibitcoin) = 100,000 satoshis = 0.001 BTC.
What is the difference between a satoshi, a bit, and an mBTC?
These are all sub-units of Bitcoin: 1 satoshi = 0.00000001 BTC (the smallest unit); 1 bit = 100 satoshis = 0.000001 BTC; 1 mBTC (millibitcoin) = 100,000 satoshis = 0.001 BTC; 1 BTC = 1,000 mBTC = 1,000,000 bits = 100,000,000 satoshis.
Why are satoshis used instead of BTC for small transactions?
At high Bitcoin prices (e.g., $50,000-$100,000+ per BTC), even small purchases represent tiny fractions of a coin. Saying a coffee costs 3,000 satoshis is more intuitive than saying it costs 0.00003 BTC. Lightning Network invoices are also denominated in satoshis.
Is there a smaller unit than a satoshi?
In the base Bitcoin protocol, the satoshi is the smallest unit (1/100,000,000 BTC). However, Bitcoin's Lightning Network uses millisatoshis (msat) internally for routing precision: 1 satoshi = 1,000 millisatoshis. Millisatoshis are not transferable on-chain; they are a Lightning-only internal unit.
