Screen Time Calculator

A couple of hours of screens here and there adds up to a startling annual total. This calculator sums your average daily hours on phone, computer, and television, then projects the total across a week, a full year, and a span of years you choose. It also shows what share of your waking day screens occupy, using your sleep hours. Every figure comes straight from the numbers you enter, with no assumed averages, so the result reflects your own habits. Use your device's built-in reports to fill in accurate daily figures.

Screen time formula

Daily total = phone + computer + TV
Weekly = daily * 7
Yearly = daily * 365.25
Waking hours = 24 - sleep
Share of waking day = daily / waking * 100
Projection days = (daily * 365.25 * years) / 24

The yearly figure uses 365.25 days to average in leap years. The projection converts total screen hours over the chosen number of years into equivalent 24-hour days, a striking way to see the lifetime scale.

Putting it in context

  • The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics American Time Use Survey tracks how people spend their days, including leisure screen use.
  • Public health guidance emphasizes balance, sleep, and movement rather than a single screen-time limit for adults.
  • Device screen-time reports give accurate daily averages to enter here.
  • The share of waking day uses 24 hours minus your sleep, so more sleep raises the screen share of remaining time.
  • All totals are neutral arithmetic; the tool makes no judgement about your usage.

Screen time: frequently asked questions

How much screen time do I get per year?

Multiply your average daily screen hours by 365.25 to allow for leap years. Two hours a day is about 731 hours a year, roughly 30 full days. This calculator sums phone, computer, and TV time, then projects it across the week, year, and a chosen number of years.

What share of my waking day is screen time?

The calculator divides total daily screen hours by your waking hours (24 minus sleep hours) and shows the percentage. If you sleep 8 hours, you have 16 waking hours, so 4 hours of screens is 25 percent of your waking day.

Why use 365.25 days per year?

Because one in every four years is a leap year with 366 days, the long-run average year length is 365.25 days. Using it makes the annual and multi-year projections slightly more accurate than a flat 365.

Is this a measurement of my actual usage?

No. It projects from the averages you type in. For precise figures, check the built-in screen-time reports on your phone and computer, then enter those daily averages here to see the longer-run totals.

What is a healthy amount of screen time?

There is no single official number for adults. Public health bodies focus on balance: breaks, sleep, and physical activity. This tool reports neutral totals and the share of your waking day so you can decide what fits your goals.
