Screen Time Percentage Calculator
A daily screen total in hours is hard to judge on its own, but expressed as a share of your day it becomes a number you can actually track and act on. This calculator turns your screen hours into a percentage. You enter how many hours you spent on screens and the total hours you are measuring against, and it divides one by the other and multiplies by 100. Five hours of screens in a 16 hour waking day comes out to 31.25 percent. The total field is fully editable on purpose: measured against a full 24 hour day the figure includes sleep and looks smaller, while measured against your waking hours it shows the share of your active time on screens, which is usually the more meaningful view. You also decide what counts, whether to fold in work screen time, which can dominate, or to track personal use only, so the result answers the question you care about. The tool does not pass judgment on your total; its value is in making the share visible so you can compare it week to week against your own goals. Every figure here is computed deterministically from your two inputs, and the worked example below reconciles exactly to the calculator.
Screen share is used hours over total hours, times 100: percentage = used / total x 100. 5 hours of screens in a 16 hour waking day is 31.25% of the day.
Screen time percentage formula
percentage = (used / total) x 100
used = hours spent on screens
total = hours measured against
result is the share of the day
Dividing screen hours by the total hours gives the fraction of the day spent on screens, and multiplying by 100 turns that fraction into a percentage.
Worked example
You spend 5 hours on screens during a 16 hour waking day.
- Divide: 5 / 16 = 0.3125
- Multiply by 100: 0.3125 x 100 = 31.25
Screens take up 31.25 percent of your waking day. These are the calculator's default inputs, so the result above matches the widget exactly.
Screen share of a 16 hour waking day
| Screen hours | Share |
|---|---|
| 2 | 12.50% |
| 4 | 25.00% |
| 5 | 31.25% |
| 8 | 50.00% |

Screen time percentage calculator: frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my screen time as a percentage?
Divide your screen hours by the total hours you are awake, then multiply by 100. Percentage equals used hours over available hours times 100. Five hours of screens in a 16 hour waking day is 5 divided by 16 times 100, which is 31.25 percent.
Should I use 24 hours or my waking hours?
Either works, but the answer means different things. Against a 24 hour day, the percentage includes sleep, which dilutes it. Against your waking hours it shows the share of your active time on screens, which is usually more meaningful. The total hours field is editable so you can choose.
What counts as screen time?
Typically phone, tablet, computer and television use. Many devices report a daily total automatically. Decide whether to include work screen time, which can dominate the figure, or to count only personal use. Enter whichever total matches the question you are asking.
Is there a recommended screen time limit?
Guidance varies by age and purpose, and public health bodies focus more on sleep, physical activity and breaks than a single number. The calculator does not judge your total, it simply expresses it as a share so you can track changes over time against your own goals.
How can I lower the percentage?
Reducing the used hours lowers the share directly, and so does increasing active non-screen time. Built-in device limits, screen-free periods before bed, and swapping some screen activities for offline ones all move the number down. Recalculate after a week to see the effect.
