Social Media Time Cost Calculator

Small daily habits add up to large annual totals. Twenty minutes a day on social apps is more than 120 hours a year, the equivalent of three full work weeks. This calculator takes your average daily minutes on social media and converts it into hours per year, full 24-hour days per year, and a dollar value based on an hourly rate you set yourself. Because the worth of your time is personal, the hourly rate is a user-editable input rather than an assumed figure. Use your device screen-time report for an accurate daily number.

Social media time cost formula

Minutes per year = daily minutes * days per year
Hours per year = minutes per year / 60
Full days per year = hours per year / 24
Time value = hours per year * hourly value
Work weeks = hours per year / 40

Each step is a straight unit conversion. There are 60 minutes in an hour and 24 hours in a day by definition, so no empirical figure is assumed. The dollar value and the days counted are both inputs you control.

Understanding the numbers

  • One hour a day equals 365 hours a year, just over nine 40-hour work weeks.
  • Apple Screen Time and Android Digital Wellbeing report your real average daily minutes per app.
  • The hourly value is your own opportunity cost, not an official wage figure.
  • A full 24-hour day output counts continuous time, useful for seeing the cumulative scale.
  • Reducing daily use by 30 minutes saves about 182 hours a year at a flat 365-day count.

Social media time cost: frequently asked questions

How is the yearly time cost calculated?

Daily minutes are multiplied by 365 days to get total minutes per year, then divided by 60 to convert to hours, and divided by 24 to express in full days. The dollar cost multiplies the yearly hours by the hourly value you enter, so the result reflects the opportunity cost of that time at a rate you choose.

What hourly value should I use?

Use whatever your time is worth to you. A common starting point is your effective hourly wage (annual income divided by hours worked), but you can use any rate. The calculator treats this as a user-editable input because the worth of personal time is subjective and not an official figure.

Does this measure addiction or harm?

No. It is a simple arithmetic tool that converts a daily usage figure into yearly totals and a notional dollar value. It makes no clinical claim. If you are concerned about screen-time habits, consider the device usage reports built into iOS and Android.

Where can I find my real daily usage?

Apple Screen Time (Settings, Screen Time) and Android Digital Wellbeing both report average daily minutes per app. Use the average daily total across the social apps you want to count, then enter that figure here.

Why use 365 days instead of 365.25?

We use a flat 365-day year for a clean, repeatable estimate. Over a typical year this differs from 365.25 by only a quarter of a day of usage, which is immaterial for a planning estimate. You can scale the daily input if you prefer a leap-year figure.
