Song Arrangement Length Calculator

When you build an arrangement out of 8 and 16-bar sections, the finished length is fixed by the bar count, the time signature, and the tempo. This calculator adds it all up so you can check a song fits a target runtime before you record. Enter the total number of bars in the arrangement, the beats per bar, and the tempo. You get the total length in seconds and as minutes and seconds, plus the total beat count.

Arrangement length formula

total beats = total bars * beats per bar
seconds = total beats * (60 / BPM)
minutes = seconds / 60
minutes:seconds = floor(minutes) and the remaining seconds

The formula assumes a single fixed tempo and time signature. Change tempo or meter mid-song? Calculate each part separately and add them.

Section planning at 120 BPM, 4/4

  • 8 bars: 16 seconds.
  • 16 bars: 32 seconds.
  • 32 bars: 1 minute 4 seconds.
  • 64 bars: 2 minutes 8 seconds.
  • 96 bars: 3 minutes 12 seconds.

Song length: frequently asked questions

How do I work out a song's length from its bars?

Multiply the total bars by the beats per bar to get the total beats, then multiply by the seconds per beat (60 divided by BPM). For example, 64 bars of 4/4 at 120 BPM is 64 times 4 times 0.5 = 128 seconds, or 2 minutes 8 seconds.

How many bars are common song sections?

Sections are usually built from 4, 8, or 16-bar phrases. A typical pop arrangement might be an 8-bar intro, two 16-bar verses, two 16-bar choruses, an 8-bar bridge, and an outro. Add up the bars of every section and enter the total here.

Does the answer assume a constant tempo?

Yes. This calculator assumes one fixed tempo and time signature throughout. If your arrangement changes tempo or meter, calculate each section separately at its own tempo and add the results.

Why show total beats as well as time?

Total beats is useful for setting the project length in a DAW, lining up click tracks, and confirming a section count. It is the bar count multiplied by the beats per bar, independent of tempo.

Sources and definitions

  • Arrangement length follows from tempo arithmetic (seconds per beat = 60 / BPM) multiplied by the bar and beat count. This is standard music arithmetic.
