Split Bill Calculator

Splitting a restaurant bill at the end of a meal is one of those everyday tasks that sounds simple but can quickly become awkward when you factor in tip, tax, and varying numbers of diners. The mathematics is straightforward: add the tip (calculated as a percentage of the bill subtotal) to get the total, then divide by the number of people. But doing this quickly in your head while also deciding on the right tip percentage can be error-prone, especially after a long evening out. This calculator removes the mental arithmetic entirely. Enter your bill amount, choose a tip percentage using the quick buttons (15%, 18%, 20%, 25%) or type a custom amount, and specify how many people are splitting the check. The calculator instantly shows the tip amount, the grand total including tip, and each person's equal share. It also shows the tip per person separately, which is useful if one person has already paid their food share and just needs to know their tip contribution. Whether you are splitting a lunch for two or dividing a dinner for a large group, this tool gives you an accurate, instant answer.

Split bill: frequently asked questions

How does the split bill calculator work?

Enter your bill subtotal, select or enter a tip percentage, and specify how many people are splitting the bill. The calculator adds the tip to the subtotal to get the total, then divides that total equally by the number of people to give each person's share.

Should I calculate tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

In the United States, the convention varies. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is technically more precise, since you are rewarding the service, not the tax. However, tipping on the post-tax total is simpler and equally common. Enter whichever amount you prefer as your bill amount.

What is a standard tip for restaurant service?

In the US, 15% is considered a minimum for adequate service, 18% is the common default, 20% is considered good, and 25% or more is for exceptional service. These quick buttons are provided in the calculator for convenience.

What if one person ordered more expensive items?

An even split assumes each person pays an equal share regardless of what they ordered. If people ordered very different amounts, a fairer approach is to total each person's individual items (plus a proportional tip) separately. The tip calculator can handle any bill amount you enter.

How do I handle rounding when splitting?

When the total does not divide evenly, the per-person amount may include fractional cents. In practice, round each person's share to the nearest cent. If the total of rounded shares is less than the actual total, one person pays a penny more to cover the difference.
