Even Split Time Calculator
An even split plan divides a goal finish time equally across the laps, miles or kilometers of a race so each segment takes the same time. Running even splits is one of the most reliable ways to reach a target without fading in the second half, because it spreads your effort across the whole distance rather than spending it early. This calculator takes a total goal time and the number of segments you want to split it into, then divides the total by the count to give the time you should aim for on each one. Enter a goal of 1 hour and 40 minutes split into four equal segments and the tool returns 25 minutes per segment. You can use it for track repeats, mile splits in a half marathon, kilometer splits in a 10K, or any workout where you want each piece to land on the same clock time. Adjust either the total time or the number of segments and the per-segment target updates instantly, so you can rehearse a race plan before the gun goes. Every figure is computed deterministically from the plain division formula, total time over segment count, shown in full below with a worked example that reconciles exactly to the calculator above.
An even split is the total goal time divided by the number of segments: split = total / segments. A 1:40:00 goal split into 4 equal segments is 25:00 per segment. Hold each split and you finish on time.
Even split formula
split = total time / number of segments
total seconds = (hours x 3600) + (minutes x 60) + seconds
split seconds = total seconds / segments
The goal time is converted to seconds and divided by the number of segments. Each segment gets the same time, so the segments add back up to the total.
Worked example
A goal of 1 hour and 40 minutes split into 4 even segments.
- Total seconds = (1 x 3,600) + (40 x 60) = 3,600 + 2,400 = 6,000 seconds
- Split = 6,000 / 4 = 1,500 seconds
- 1,500 seconds = 25 minutes 0 seconds per segment
- Check: 25:00 x 4 = 1:40:00, the full goal time
These are the calculator's default inputs, so the result above matches the widget exactly.
Even Split Time Calculator: frequently asked questions
What is an even split?
An even split means each segment of a race takes the same amount of time. If a goal is 1 hour 40 minutes over four segments, an even split is 25 minutes each. It is the opposite of going out fast and slowing down, and is a common pacing strategy for distance events.
How do I calculate the time per segment?
Convert the total goal time to seconds, then divide by the number of segments. 1:40:00 is 6,000 seconds; divided by four segments that is 1,500 seconds, or 25 minutes per segment. This calculator does the conversion and division for you.
Are even splits better than negative splits?
A negative split, where later segments are slightly faster, can be faster overall for trained runners. Even splits are a simpler, lower-risk target that helps avoid starting too fast. Both are far better than a positive split, where you fade in the second half.
Can I use this for swimming or cycling intervals?
Yes. Any time you want to divide a total target time into equal pieces, the same division applies: total time divided by the number of pieces. It works for pool repeats, bike intervals, rowing splits and track laps.
Does pacing evenly help my health?
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends building activity gradually and avoiding sudden spikes in intensity. Even pacing keeps effort steady, which can make a long session more sustainable and lower the chance of overexertion.
