Stucco Calculator
Stucco is a durable exterior finish applied over a wire lath in a traditional 3-coat system: the scratch coat, the brown coat, and the finish coat. Each coat has a different function and coverage rate. The scratch coat (first coat) is applied approximately 3/8 inch thick and scratched to create a mechanical bond for the brown coat. The brown coat (second coat) levels the surface and is also approximately 3/8 inch thick. The finish coat is a thin decorative layer at approximately 1/8 inch. An 80-lb bag of stucco base coat typically covers about 20 to 25 square feet per coat, and a finish coat bag covers about 40 to 50 square feet, though this varies by mix design and application method. This calculator uses 22 sq ft per coat for base coats and 45 sq ft for the finish coat as conservative reference values. Always check the coverage stated on the specific product you purchase. Subtract window and door openings from the total wall area before entering the figure below.
Stucco bag count formula
Area with waste = Net wall area x (1 + Waste %)
Scratch coat bags = Ceiling(Area with waste / Base coverage)
Brown coat bags = Ceiling(Area with waste / Base coverage)
Finish coat bags = Ceiling(Area with waste / Finish coverage)
Total = Scratch + Brown + Finish
Worked example
Wall area: 800 sq ft. Base: 22 sq ft/bag. Finish: 45 sq ft/bag. Waste: 10%.
- Area with waste = 800 x 1.10 = 880 sq ft
- Scratch = Ceiling(880 / 22) = 40 bags
- Brown = Ceiling(880 / 22) = 40 bags
- Finish = Ceiling(880 / 45) = 20 bags
- Total = 40 + 40 + 20 = 100 bags
Frequently asked questions
How many bags of stucco do I need per coat?
An 80-lb bag of stucco base coat (scratch or brown) typically covers about 20 to 25 square feet per coat at standard application thickness. A finish coat 80-lb bag covers about 40 to 50 square feet. This calculator uses 22 sq ft per coat for base coats and 45 sq ft for the finish coat as conservative estimates.
What is a 3-coat stucco system?
Traditional stucco uses three coats: the scratch coat (first coat, applied to the lath), the brown coat (second coat, leveled and floated), and the finish coat (texture and color). Each coat is typically 3/8 inch thick for the scratch and brown coats and 1/8 inch for the finish coat. The 3-coat system provides durability and weather resistance.
Can I use one-coat stucco instead of three coats?
One-coat stucco products are available and approved by many local codes. They are applied in a single 3/8 to 5/8 inch layer over fiber-reinforced lath. Coverage varies by product. Always check the manufacturer's data sheet and local building code for approval.
Do I need to add a waste factor for stucco?
Yes. Add 10 to 15 percent for corners, openings, waste, and variations in application thickness. Rough or textured surfaces may absorb more material than flat surfaces. This calculator allows you to set a waste percentage.
Does stucco coverage include wall openings?
You should subtract window and door openings from the total wall area before calculating stucco. For most residential walls, openings reduce the coverage area by 10 to 20 percent. Measure each opening and deduct the area from the gross wall area.
