Succulent Watering Calculator

The succulent watering calculator tells you how many days to wait between waterings for your succulents and cacti based on pot type, season, and climate. Overwatering is by far the most common cause of succulent death. Most succulents are adapted to arid and semi-arid habitats where rainfall is infrequent but heavy, followed by long dry periods. This calculator applies the soak-and-dry method endorsed by university horticulture extension services to give you a practical, species-appropriate watering schedule.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water succulents?

In the growing season (spring and summer), water succulents every 7 to 14 days when soil is completely dry. In the dormant season (autumn and winter), reduce watering to every 21 to 42 days or even once a month. Most succulent deaths are caused by overwatering, which causes root rot. Always use the soak-and-dry method: water thoroughly, then wait until completely dry.

What is the soak-and-dry method for succulents?

Water the succulent thoroughly until water drains freely from the bottom of the pot, then do not water again until the top 1 to 2 inches of soil are completely dry. For succulents, this usually takes 7 to 14 days indoors in summer and 3 to 6 weeks in winter. This method mimics the natural rainfall pattern in succulent native habitats.

Does pot material affect how often to water succulents?

Yes. Terracotta pots are porous and allow soil to dry faster, requiring more frequent watering (7 to 10 days in summer). Plastic and glazed pots retain moisture longer, so water every 10 to 14 days. Glass pots have no drainage and should generally be avoided for succulents, or used with extreme caution and infrequent watering.

How does season affect succulent watering?

Most succulents are summer-growing and enter dormancy in winter. During summer, they actively grow and need more frequent watering (every 1 to 2 weeks). In winter dormancy, reduce watering to once every 3 to 6 weeks or simply when leaves start to look slightly wrinkled. Some cacti and winter-growing succulents reverse this pattern.

What soil mix should I use for succulents?

Use a fast-draining mix of 50% mineral material (coarse sand, perlite, or pumice) and 50% organic material (cactus potting mix or regular potting soil). The soil should dry out completely between waterings. USDA Extension horticulture guides recommend avoiding regular potting soil alone for succulents as it retains too much moisture.
