How swimming pace is calculated

Pace per 100m is calculated by dividing total time by total distance in metres, then multiplying by 100. The result is expressed in minutes and seconds.

Pace per 100m (seconds) = (total time in seconds / distance in metres) x 100
Pace per 100 yards (seconds) = (total time in seconds / distance in yards) x 100

Worked example

Swimmer covers 1,000 metres in 20:00 (1,200 seconds), body weight 70 kg:

  1. Pace per 100m = (1,200 / 1,000) x 100 = 120 seconds = 2:00 per 100m
  2. Distance in yards = 1,000 / 0.9144 = 1,093.6 yards
  3. Pace per 100 yards = (1,200 / 1,093.6) x 100 = 109.7 seconds = 1:49.7 per 100 yards
  4. Laps in 25m pool = 1,000 / 50 = 20 laps
  5. Laps in 50m pool = 1,000 / 100 = 10 laps
  6. Calories = 6.0 x 70 x (20/60) = 140 kcal
